Joanna Smith, a climate activist, has confessed to her involvement in vandalizing the revered ballerina sculpture by Edgar Degas, which was on display at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC. This admission of guilt was made on December 15 in the US District Court, as outlined in a press release from the Department of Justice. Consequently, Smith now confronts the possibility of a prison sentence of up to five years, coupled with a potential fine of $250,000.
The incident itself unfolded on April 27 when Joanna Smith, accompanied by her fellow climate activist Timothy Martin, entered the premises of the NGA while carrying containers filled with paint. The pair proceeded to approach Degas's "La petite danseuse de quatorze ans" (Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, 1880), removing the paint-filled containers from their bags and applying the paint to the sculpture's casing and pedestal, as elaborated upon in the press release.
As the paint dripped onto the floor around them, Smith vocalized her motives for the act to onlookers. The press release also reveals that Smith and Martin had conducted thorough research on the artwork and deliberately singled it out for their protest. Prior to entering the National Gallery, they had even recorded video statements outlining the rationale behind their actions.
Subsequently, in the aftermath of this vandalism, the NGA opted to temporarily withdraw the sculpture from its exhibition for a period of ten days to facilitate the necessary restoration work. The expenses incurred for these repairs totaled over $4,000, surpassing the previously reported figure of $2,400. In May, both Joanna Smith and Timothy Martin found themselves facing charges of "conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States and injury to a National Gallery of Art exhibit."

Former Florida principal visits Florence after being let go for displaying Michelangelo's "David."
A Florida administrator, Hope Carrasquilla, who was let go for bringing Michelangelo's naked David sculpture into a classroom, was flown to Florence on a taxpayer-funded vacation to see the work late last month.
At the Tallahassee charter school Carrasquilla used to lead, parents complained that the inclusion of the well-known landmark on the curriculum bordered on the "pornographic." The news spread like wildfire over the globe. The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, and the Director of the Galleria dell'Accademia, Cecilie Hollberg, extended an invitation to her and her family to view David in April.
Hollberg said of Ms. Carrasquilla's visit to Florence's Accademia Gallery, "It is an enormous pleasure to have Ms. I am so excited to give her a personal tour of our museum and introduce her to David, a sculpture with zero pornographic connotations. A religious symbol of good triumphing over evil, beautifully rendered.
In the American South, the Carrasquilla case spurred passionate debates over what constitutes a "age-appropriate" curriculum. (It even inspired a sketch on Saturday Night Live!) The school follows the "classical education curriculum model," which emphasizes recommitting oneself to "central values" and "the Western tradition."
In response to conservative concerns that public education has recently prioritized issues of race and gender identity, Republican lawmakers in Florida have attempted to make classical education programs mandatory in the secondary school system.
Carrasquilla, meantime, had a fantastic time in David's company. It was the fact that "this whole gallery was built for him" that "impressed me the most and that I didn't know," she said. It's quite reminiscent of a church, and I find that very appealing. I hope you can see the humanity and honesty of this person in this. This is precisely why I've always been drawn to it. In and of itself, the human body is flawless.
