গুঁটি পোকার জীবন থেকে নেওয়া রেশমশিল্প ঘিরেই ঐতিহ্যবাহী সিল্কসিটি হয়ে ওঠে রাজশাহী। রেশম মথের শুঁয়াপোকা থেকে রেশমগুটি এবং তা থেকে তৈরি হয় সুতা। সেই সুতা দিয়ে হ্যান্ডলুম বা পাওয়ার লুমে তৈরি করা হয় থান কাপড়। যা দিয়ে রঙ-বেরঙের শাড়ি, পাঞ্জাবি, থ্রি-পিছ, কামিজ, শার্ট-ফতুয়াসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের পোশাক তৈরি হয়।
সিল্কশিল্প ঘিরে রাজশাহী, চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জ, ঠাকুরগাঁওসহ উত্তরের জেলাগুলোতে চাষ করা হতো রেশম পোকা। তা দিয়ে স্থানীয়ভাবে সুতা তৈরি করে বাহারি সিল্কপোশাক উৎপাদন করা হতো। রেশমশিল্পের সেই স্বর্ণযুগ এখন অতীত। দেখা মেলেনা রেশম চাষ, তৈরি হয়না সুতাও। ফলে বন্ধ সিল্কসিটি খ্যাত রাজশাহীর অধিকাংশ কারখানা।
হাতেগোনা যে কারখানাগুলো চালু রয়েছে, তারাও পোশাক উৎপাদনে চীন থেকে আমদানিকৃত সুতার উপর নির্ভরশীল। রাজশাহী নগরীর সপুরা এলাকায় সচল থাকা সিল্কের কারখানাগুলো চীন থেকেই ৯৫ শতাংশ সুতা আমদানি করে। তবে চীনে সম্প্রতি মহামারি করোনাভাইরাস ছড়িয়ে পড়ায় প্রায় দুই মাস সুতা আমদানি বন্ধ। মজুত সুতায় এখন চলছে পোশাক উৎপাদন। তবে তা একেবারে শেষ পর্যায়ে।
কারখানাগুলোতে খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা গেছে, চলতি মাস থেকে পুনরায় সুতা আমদানি করা সম্ভব না হলে রাজশাহীর সিল্ক কারখানাগুলোতে উৎপাদন পুরোপুরি বন্ধ হয়ে যাবে। সুতা সংকটে উৎপাদন ব্যাহত হওয়ায় আসছে পহেলা বৈশাখ, ঈদ ও পূজায় চাহিদা অনুযায়ী বাজারে পোশাক সরবরাহ করা সম্ভব হবে না। ফলে সিল্কের পোশাকের দামও আরো বাড়বে।
কারখানার কর্মচারী-কর্মকর্তারা জানান, কারখানায় যে সুতা মজুত আছে, তা দিয়ে আরও ১৫/২০ দিন কোনোমতে কারখানা চালু রাখা যাবে। এরমধ্যে যদি সুতা না আসে, তবে সুতা সংকটে কারখানা বন্ধ হয়ে যাবে। পহেলা বৈশাখে নববর্ষ উৎসবে বাজারে পোশাকের চাহিদা মেটাতে হিমশিম খেতে হবে। সামনে ঈদ-উল-ফিতরেরও বেশিদিন নেই। আর সুতা সংকটে কর্মঘণ্টা কমে যাওয়ায় বিপাকে সিল্ক শ্রমিকরাও।
জানতে চাইলে ‘সপুরা সিল্ক’ এর কর্মচারী সাজেদা আনজুম বলেন, ‘জৌলুস পোশাকগুলো চীনের সুতা দিয়ে তৈরি করা হয়। স্থানীয় সুতায় তৈরি পোশাকের রঙ ও সৌন্দর্য কম। রাজশাহী ও চাঁপাইয়ের রেশমে এখন ভাল সুতাও পাওয়া যায় না। কিন্তু চীনের সুতা আমদানি দুই মাস ধরে বন্ধ। কারখানায় মজুত রাখা সুতা দিয়ে আমরা কাজ করছি।’
‘মহুয়া সিল্ক ফ্যাশন’র কর্মকর্তা আমজাদ হোসেন বলেন, ‘আমরা চেষ্টা করছি- চীনের সুতা আমদানি করার। কিন্তু করোনাভাইরাসের কারণে সব ধরনের আমদানি প্রক্রিয়া বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। যে সুতা আছে, তা দিয়ে মাসখানেকও উৎপাদন প্রক্রিয়া চালানো সম্ভব নয়।’
তিনি বলেন, ‘বৈশাখী উৎসবের পোশাক মার্চের মাঝামাঝি থেকেই শো-রুমে পাঠাতে হয়। অর্থাৎ হাতে আছে মাত্র এক সপ্তাহ। ক্যালেন্ডার অনুযায়ী- ঈদ-উল-ফিতর মে মাসের শেষ দিকে। অর্থাৎ রমজান শুরু হচ্ছে এপ্রিলে। মূলত রমজান শুরুর আগেই আমরা শো-রুমে ঈদের পোশাক পাঠিয়ে দ
