What's the one thing ancient Mecca needed for survival?
According to the Standard Islamic Narrative, Mecca has been a city which has existed since the time of Adam and Eve, so it is the oldest city in history.
It is where Abraham lived in 1900 BC (see Surah 21:51-71), so it has to be pretty historical.
It is also where Muhammad was born and lived for his first 52 years, so it must have been around by the 6th - 7th centuries.
But there is a problem with these accounts, because in order for Mecca to be that historical it needs one simple ingredient...WATER.
And Mecca is in a desert, with little to no water at all (Note: the Zam-Zam well we will soon prove is not historical at all either).
So, why is water important?
•Where there is a desert, there’s no water
•Where there is no water, there’s no food
•Where there is no food, there’s no people
•Where there are no people, there’s no towns
•Where there are no towns, there’s no cities
•Where there are no cities, there’s no civilization
•Where there is no civilization, there’s NO HISTORY!
And if Mecca has no history, than Muhammad could have not come from there.
If there is no one named Muhammad living in Mecca, than there can be no Qur'an.
Without Mecca, Muhammad, or the Qur'an, then there is simply no Islam.
They all depend on WATER!
So, the next time a Muslim starts waxing eloquent about his prophet living in Mecca and doing all these wonderful things there...simply remind him of two words - NO WATER...

al Fadi and I have done a number of series together unpacking the historical problems with 'The Book' (the Qur'an), and 'The Man' (Muhammad), and they have been well received by you, our audience.
It is now time to do another series on 'The Place' (Mecca), because while it is simple to dismiss the Qur'an, since we have no reference of any such completed book in the 7th century (though one may still come to light), nor do we find any 7th century historical evidence for a man named Muhammad who supposedly received such a book (though we will accept anything Muslims can provide), it is much more difficult to dismiss the place, Mecca.
Why? Because it is so much larger than a simple book or a simple man, as it is an entire city, and one which Muslims claim existed long before the 7th century, in fact from the time of Adam and Eve themselves; thus, the earliest settlement for mankind!
A city that old, or that prominent you cannot simply ignore historically because it is in a location which anyone can go to and investigate.
What's more, if Mecca can be proven to not have existed at any time prior to the 7th century, than almost everything Muslims believe will be put in doubt, since without the place, you cannot have the book or the man.
in other words everything is dependent on the city Mecca existing during or prior to the time of Muhammad.
So, sit back and enjoy this new series, as we investigate whether Mecca really did exist at the time of Muhammad and before...

So, can Muslims claim that their Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, was the first to use the name "Muhammad"?
The answer is obvious...of course not. The word Muhammad, or rather the four consonants which are the root for that word MHMD were well known and well used long before the Muslims stole it and applied it to their prophet.
Mel, using A.J. Deuce's research, takes us back to the time of king David and Solomon (around 1000 BC) where in Psalms 68:16 and Proverbs 12:12 we find this same root in Hebrew (note: both Hebrew and Arabic come from the same root, and only used consonants in ancient times, so that the letters HMD would be the Hebrew equivalent to the Arabic word MHMD, later applied to the prophet of Islam sometime in the 8th century).
In both Hebrew and Arabic this word meant "lovely, or desired, praised, or pleasant".
When we refer to the famous and popular verse used by Muslims to try and find their prophet Muhammad in our Bible, that of Song of Solomon 5:16, we find it saying "His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is ALTOGETHER LOVELY (Machmad). This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem".
The word 'Machmad' here can be translated as "desired, praised, pleasant, or lovely" which in the context seems to refer to the author himself, in other words to King Solomon, and that is the meaning the Jews today give to it.
In 387 AD, however, Saint Ambrose maintained that the word 'machmad' in Song of Solomon was to refer to Jesus. It was this meaning which the church then applied to this word all the way up to and including the 7th and 8th century, when the Qur'an was supposedly written.
Therefore, both the Jews in 1000 BC and the Christians in 387 AD had used this word "MHMD" long before the Muslims then grabbed it and applied it to their prophet sometime in the 8th century AD, proving yet again that the man Muhammad wasn't a historical figure at all, but was nothing more than a borrowed name taken from the Jews and Christians before them, much they did with our scriptures.

Jay no longer lives in the UK, and therefore is no longer a regular speaker at Speaker's Corner, a venue which he regularly spoke at for 25 years (from 1992 - 2027).
In fact it has been over 2 years since he was last down to the Corner. He returned to London with some of his Christian friends, all of whom work or engage in ministries with Muslims in a number of different countries; yet, none of whom have ever been up on a ladder, but were willing to try it out for their first time.
These short videos were filmed at Speaker's Corner, over a period of 4 hours on Sunday, the 9th of June, 2024.
This first video Jay stands alongside a good long-time friend, John, who, unlike the others that day, has regularly been at the Corner.
John and Jay try to get Muslims to defend their prophet Muhammad, which they refuse to do. So, Jay and John explain their reticence by doing a quick comparison between Muhammad and Jesus, with the crowd enthusiastically giving their own opinion at the end as to which of the two they prefer.

As we claimed in the last video, the Qur'an is elevated way beyond what we would consider appropriate for the Bible.
Take the example of an old man I met in a Pennsylvania mosque, who was highly revered due to his ability to quote, by memory, any passage from the Qur'an. Yet, I never saw him lead any discussions on the Qur'an. A young Saudi Arabian man was given that responsibility. When I asked, “Why?” I was told that the old gentleman didn't understand Arabic well (memorizing thus doesn't command understanding), while the younger man did.
It shocked me to find a man who had spent years memorizing the Qur’an yet had no desire to understand the content of its message. Is it no wonder, then, that Muslims find little need to translate their most holy book? Merit is found in the rote reading of the Qur'an in Arabic, and not in its message.
Another example was by a friend of mine in London who considered the Qur'an the epitome of beauty and offered me certain surahs as examples. Yet, when I asked him to translate the texts he could not.
Some of the Muslim students at the university I attended who could quote certain passages, admired the beauty of the text, but had great difficulty in explaining the meaning. I found it disconcerting that the ‘beauty of the Qur'an’ had such an influence, yet its ‘beauty’ seemed, in fact, to discourage its understanding, as it would become an enemy to its mystique.
In much of the Muslim world, including Senegal (where we lived for five years), leather amulets worn on the body are sold outside the mosques (sometimes called Giri-giri). Within these amulets one can find folded pieces of paper with an aya, or verse from the Qur'an written on them. These verses supposedly have power to ward off evil spirits and diseases. For these Muslims the very letters of the Qur'an are imbued with supernatural power.
Here then is the key which points to the difference between the scriptures of the Christians and that of the Muslims. Muslims tell me that by memorizing it and then repeating it verbatim, they receive ‘baraka’, a blessing, which is recorded by an invisible ‘recording angel’ sitting on their right shoulder. These records are credited against the evil deeds recorded by another invisible angel sitting on a person’s left shoulder, so that in order to gain their salvation their good deeds need to outweigh their bad deeds; a sort of bank account with credits and debits added up and subtracted throughout their life.

What have we found out about the Qur'an using Historical Textual Criticism?
The Answer: A good deal, and it isn't very pretty!
Looking at all of the earliest manuscripts of the Qur'an we can get our hands on (we're really only talking about 6: the Topkapi, Samarkand, Petropolitanus, Ma'il, Husseini and the Saana manuscripts), we find that none of them are original Manuscripts from the 7th century, none of them are complete, and none of them agree completely with each other, to say nothing of agreeing with the Hafs text which is the standard text today.
it's changed and been accreted and deleted over the past 1400 years.
But we now find that it was originally written in Aramaic, and was all about Jesus.
So, let's bring it back to Jesus again, since it was all about Him to begin with!

Dr Patrica Crone pretty much debunked any possibility of a land trade route through Mecca.
We now look at whether there was any Sea trade route, via the Red Sea through Mecca as well. Otherwise, how did Mecca become rich and famous, and where did the Standard Islamic Narrative get all its information that Mecca was the center of trade from the time of Alexander the Great (328 BC), right up until the time of Muhammad?
Is this historical?
According to the historical account, Alexander the Great, in the 4th century BC tried to get to Egypt by sea by going around the Arab Peninsula, hoping that he could attack Egypt by surprise by coming by sea.
The 1st expedition only got as far as Bahrain, the 2nd to the Gulf of Oman, while the 3rd expedition made it around Arabia, and up the Red Sea, all the way to Egypt, but it had to turn around and come back, as there was no ports to get supplies.
No place for Supplies, on the Arabian coast? Why?
Here’s why…
To understand the problem, we must look at a Topographical map, where you will see the Water ways in the Red Sea (Chiara Zazzaro - 2013).
In the center of the Red Sea is a deep-water channel, which accommodates large modern ships today. But there were no large container ships in the 7th century. They used small boats which employed sails in order to be pushed by the wind.
When one looks to the West of the deep central channel one can see that there are two shallower water channels where these smaller boats went, in order to stay close to the Western shore where they could get provisions.
And why did they have to stay close to just the Western shore?
Unlike the Eastern Arabian shore which was arid, with no fresh water, and thus few people or towns, the Western African shore had plenty of fresh water, with larger populations, and plenty of provisions.
What’s more, the West coast had easily accessible ports, in fact 5 of them!
We know their names, because much was written about these ports in the historical books.
The 5 coastal cities along the Red Sea’s Western coast included:
•Assab, in Eritrea (dated to 246 BC)
•Adulis, in Eritrea (dated to 79 AD)
•Suaken, in the Sudan (dated to 170 AD)
•Berenice, in Egypt (dated to 275 BC)
•Safaga, in Egypt (dated to 282 BC)
Notice that their dates all predate Islam.
What's more, all 5 of these ports are a day’s distance by boat from each other.
Meanwhile, on the Red Sea’s Eastern Arabian coast, only Yanbu is known, created as Yathrib’s port city.
So, what about Jeddah, as the port city for Mecca?
According to Dr G. R. Hawting, we have no history for Jeddah until the 8th century. It seems that Jeddah was created as the new port city for around the 8th century AD.

Normally, when one begins any research into the Qur'an, the first question which should be asked is how we know that it is what the Muslims claim it to be, the 'Word of God'? In order to answer that question, we would need to go to the source of the Qur'an, to its author, to ascertain just what this means.
Yet, here in lies the dilemma, since no Muslim knows who the author of the Qur’an is. It can’t be Allah, because Allah is incapable of entering ‘time and space’ and coming to earth to write a book. It can’t be Muhammad, because he could neither read nor write. So, who else is left? Could it be Zaid ibn Thabit, Muhammad’s secretary, or Uthman, the caliph credited with compiling the final recension of the Qur’an?
The external Historical critique of the Qur'an dealt with this very problem very well, confronting us with the dearth of any manuscript of any Qur’an from the time of Muhammad, or Uthman, or of anyone else in the 7th century, so I won't repeat those arguments here.
Suffice it to say, that the only real source for the Qur'an that we’re left with is the book itself, and what the Muslim Traditions tell us concerning how that book came to be created. Because of their late compilations (200-300 years after the event), and the contradicting documentation which we now possess prior to 750 A.D., we find it difficult to consider either of them as valid or authentic source material.
However, since we are attempting to compare the Qur'an with our own scriptures, we will, for the time being, set aside our historical prejudices and assume, for arguments sake, that the Islamic traditions are correct. In other words, we will take the position of current orthodox Muslim scholarship and presume that the Qur'an was sent down to a man named Muhammad between 610-632 AD, and then compiled between the years 650-652 A.D., under the auspices of the caliph Uthman, and that the Qur'an we have in our hands today, is that very Qur'an.
It is from this premise that we will attempt to respond to the question of whether the Qur'an is the 'Word of God', and as such, can claim to be the final and most perfect revelation of God's word to humanity.

Joe now poses a challenge for the Pfanderfilms audience.
We know that the present 'Hafs' Qur'an is a reworked text by the 8th - 10th century Abbasids borrowed from earlier Judeo-Christian lectionaries, hymns and homilies.
So, how can we get back to that earlier text, the book created by the Umayyads in the 7th - 8th centuries, or what we could call the 'Proto-Qur'an'?
Joe has a key made up of 11 steps which he believes can unlock all of the problem verses and chapters in the Qur'an, which include:
1. Remember the word or phrase must harmonize with Mishnaic Messianism of the 7th century.
2. Open a word-for-word Quranic study resource, such as "Corpus Quranicum", or "Qur'an Gateway", both of which are on the Internet.
3. Consider that the words Allah/Alrahman/Alrahim were actually references to a trinity, made up of Father/Son/Spirit.
4. Apply the Tripartite Christology to the text (i.e. Prophet/King/Priest, or that Jesus was often the Angel in the Old Testament, and also referred to as the 'Word', and 'Spirit of the Lord').
5. Remember that the Oriental Orthodoxy at that time opposed Modalism (i.e. that all three persons of the trinity were together in Jesus like water/ice/steam). So, were the words or phrases confronting Modalism?
6. Remember also that the Oriental Orthodoxy opposed Tritheism (a team of 3 separate gods). So, could the earlier text be confronting this view? The word of trinity 'Thaluth" is not found in the Qur'an, replaced with 'Thalatha' (the number 3).
7. Did the earlier text oppose Judaizer/Nazarene adoptionists (the idea that Jesus was adopted by God at his baptism, so a sort of Messiah, but not 'the' Messiah)?
8. Were these earlier texts representative of a Monophysite tradition in opposition to an 'Apotheosis' (what Joe suggests was a Mesopotamian Paganism, possibly Zoroastrianism)? An example of this was the word 'sharkatul' = associators, which he believes was against paganism, and not Christians, as the popular rendering of this term is used.
9. Were these earlier texts representative of Monophysite Christianity (i.e. the view that Jesus was only and entirely divine, but could appear as a human)?
10. If all of these 9 keys failed, then try to Cross-reference or look for alternative words. The example he used was the reference to "We make no distinction" could instead mean "we make no division".
11. Finally, if you still cannot find the meaning, remove the diacritical marks and vowelization, and consider then a Judeo-Arabic meaning.
12. Once you have gone through all of the above 11, and you still cannot find the meaning of he word or phrase, contact Joe (redjudaism@gmail.com) for a solution from Joe, and if he cannot find any, then the first to find a fault with this key will receive $500 from Joe!
