No police were around as the black bloc traveled down the Shattuck Ave today in Berkeley, and a handful used hammers to smash the windows of the Berkeley US Marine Corps Recruiting office.
After another was filmed throwing a torch into a dumpster, one of them called a few over to confront Ford Fischer of News2Share, demanding that he leave and go "at least 50 meters back."
"Get the fuck back. Cops aren't here. They won't help you."
Protesters went on to allegedly start three Dumpster fires, vandalized 20 cars and set one on fire.

When asked by News2share contributor and political commentator Jon-Christopher Bua about the role of Russia in the fight against ISIS, Press secretary Josh Earnest remarks that this is a mutual interest between them and the United States. Specifically, he remarks that there is significant evidence of Russians who have left Russia and could come back to commit acts of terror there. He uses the opportunity as well to observe that The United States and Russia still disagree over some issues such as Ukraine. However, he remarks that their mutual interest in stopping ISIS and their joint efforts at the international space station show the ability of the countries to work together when needed.
Jon-Christopher Bua told News2share afterwards: "It has been reported that the Russians made an overture to the Iraqis that they would be supportive in defeating ISIL. Perhaps a good opportunity for President Obama to reach out to President Putin to join the Coalition in this effort. As the coalition grows internationally this might be a way to bridge the growing divide between the US, Europe and Russia- A win win for all. It is clear that both the US and Russia share this common interest. Josh Earnest did not rule out that possibility, and in fact noted that the US and Russia continue to have a good working relationship in regards to international security."

While Washington DC prepared for "Unite the Right 2," activists in Charlottesville, Virginia mourned the loss of Heather Heyer and condemned last year's rally. A variety of anti-fascist, Black Lives Matter, and other groups assembled and were met by a large display of police force.
The situation escalated throughout the day, and police used riot tactics to make arrests based on weapons and mask charges (including for an activist with razor blades). The event stood in stark contrast to the previous year, where police mostly stood aside.

About 45 activists were arrested as the third "FTP" protest against the police marched throughout New York City Friday night.
The protesters demand that public transportation be made free and that the NYPD itself be abolished.
The protest began in Grand Central Terminal, where police threatened to arrest anyone wearing masks. As hundreds assembled, several dozen were wearing masks. Police periodically stepped in and pulled masked protesters out, arresting them ahead of the march kicking off.
In at least one case, activists attempted to physically prevent an arrestee from being taken outside. The ensuring struggle resulted in further arrests.
The group eventually left Grand Central Terminal, chanting "How do you spell racist? NYPD!"
In the first "FTP" protest, activists had hopped subway turnstiles in the hundreds. The civil disobedience was intended to promote the group's demand that the New York subway be made free to ride.
Friday night, police attempted to prevent activists from entering the subway, sometimes pushing them away to erect barriers.
"Back the fuck up!" yelled an officer at an activist trying to get into the subway.
Dozens made it in through an uncovered entrance, either hopping the turnstiles or going through an emergency gate.
The activists spanned as far as Brooklyn, where police deployed mace on at least one occasion.

"Declare Emergency" climate activists blocked a street in Washington DC again Saturday, their third time this week. This time, several drivers got out of their cars yelling "I wanna go to work!" and grabbing their banners out of their hands.
When police arrived, they recognized one of the climate activists blocking the road as having been arrested in a similar act on Wednesday.
"You're under arrest for contempt of court!" an officer declared. Drivers clapped and cheered as he was handcuffed.
Police typically give three warnings before arresting road-blockers in DC, but this time, they gave one: "You're not getting three warnings!"
As some began leaving the road, MPD's Jason Bagshaw said "everyone's under arrest" and had all of them cuffed.
"Y'all know you haven't done the proper warnings?" said one of the climate activists in handcuffs, having expected three warnings and a chance to avoid arrest.
"We don't have to," an officer told her before all of them, including their police liaison, were taken away.

Before the beginning of the 2014 Million Mask March, several protesters affiliated with the march as well as other environmental causes blockaded the entrance to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) so that employees could not get in. Protesters were given three warnings to disperse before arrests occurred, and one officer quite notably remarked that "anyone who backs up is going to jail for assault," implying that if the back of a protester were to touch an officer, it would constitute and assault charge.

As jury selection began Monday for the trial of Derrick Chauvin, the officer who stands accused of murder in the death of George Floyd, peaceful protests took place in Minneapolis.
Hundreds of activist demanded that Chauvin (and the other three officers involved who await a separate trial) be convicted, and that additional reforms be imposed in the direction of community policing.
Jury selection was postponed after one hour when the prosecution argued for reinstating a third degree murder charge that had previously been dropped. Chauvin faces 40 years in prison on 2nd degree murder and manslaughter charges.
