All paints are NOT created equal! If you're planning to use your helmet on the field, it's critical that it gets painted by licensed reconditioners. Only they use paints approved by the helmet manufacturers so they will not have a negative chemical reaction with the shell. Sure, anyone can physically pull out a spray can or take their helmet to a local auto body. And the paint in the can or at that shop MIGHT be OK. But there are tons of very common paints that are not OK that work perfectly fine on other materials. We would never take that chance on such an important piece of safety equipment.
