Ep. 5596 - Dave DeCamp on Developments in Afghanistan and Syria - 9/9/21
This week on Antiwar Radio, Scott talked with Dave DeCamp. DeCamp gives an update on Afghanistan where the Taliban are attempting to form a government. Both Scott and DeCamp agree that the Taliban are likely to face difficulties as they try to govern the country, especially if they continue to only appoint Pashtun men to positions of power. Both point to the retaliatory drone strike that killed civilians in Kabul as a preview of what “over the horizon” operations will look like if Biden is serious about continuing them. Lastly, DeCamp provides an update on Syria where insiders appear to be happy with the status quo. And both Scott and DeCamp point to northern Syria as a perfect example of Washington’s hypocrisy on “terrorist safe-havens.”
David Stockman reminds us how flimsy the “Russiagate” case has been from the very beginning, and that we should really be focusing on how the investigation even got started in the first place. Stockman claims that President Trump’s idea that it would be better to cooperate with Russia rather than continue a new Cold War with them was intolerable to the ruling class, who want America to remain undisputed atop the world geopolitical hierarchy, which means policing the globe and flexing our military might at every opportunity. The Russiagate investigation has been nothing but an elaborate attempt to bring Trump down for other reasons. Stockman dismantles each pillar of the phony case one by one.
David Stockman is the ultimate Washington insider turned iconoclast. He began his career in Washington as a young man and quickly rose through the ranks of the Republican Party to become the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan. After leaving the White House, Stockman had a 20-year career on Wall Street. He is the author of Trumped!, The Triumph of Politics, and his history of the financial crisis, The Great Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America.

Scott interviews Daniel McAdams about the uprisings in Kazakhstan this week on Antiwar Radio. McAdams explains why these violent protests broke out. He then points to how this has all the markings of a western-backed color-coded revolution. Scott and McAdams discuss the geopolitical importance of Kazakhstan and the “coalition of interests” with their eyes on the country.

Trevor Aaronson, a contributing writer at The Intercept, discusses his 4-part series on the nearly 800 people prosecuted by the US government on terrorism-related charges since 9/11, supposedly for serious crimes endangering the lives of Americans. However, most of them didn’t commit a violent act, more than 400 have been released, and others were the victims of entrapment by informants working for law enforcement agencies.

Scott is joined by Joe Lauria of Consortium News. Lauria gives us a detailed account of Assange’s eventful past year. A British judge, who despite agreeing that Assange had violated the Espionage Act by publishing secrets handed to him, refused to extradite him to the U.S. out of concern for his safety. Lauria explains all of this and puts these events in a broader context.

Scott interviews Patrick Martin on his new article series, “The CIA Democrats,” in which he outlines the disturbing trend of dozens of former military commanders, State Department war planners, and outright CIA, FBI, and Military Intelligence agents seeking nomination from the Democratic Party in congressional elections. Their victories would create a strong pro-war faction within the party, since by Martin’s reckoning, only a single one of these candidates has come out with an anti-war position. In some cases it may even technically be illegal for these men and women to seek political office. Unfortunately, Martin explains, most American liberals actually think President Trump isn’t hostile enough to foreign countries, citing his ‘willingness to cozy up to dictators’ in the form of peace talks and aversion to war.
Patrick Martin is the senior national political writer for the World Socialist Web Site, where he is the author of numerous articles.

Scott interviews Lyle Goldstein about the danger posed by escalating conflicts in Europe and the Pacific. First Goldstein, who correctly predicted the February invasion, gives his account of where the war in Ukraine stands today and where it’s likely to go. He and Scott then talk about some of the important details for listeners to understand about nuclear weapons and nuclear war. Lastly, they discuss the growing tension over Taiwan. Goldstein is worried that the war in Ukraine mixed with the promise of greater western military aid for Taiwan years down the road will convince Beijing that now is the best time to invade the island.
