Basan, the northern part of the territory east of the Jordan. Og was defeated of Basan when Moses defeated him and conquered the country (Deut. 3:1-11). Basan, the name of which refers probably to the richness of the soil, is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament (e.g., Deut. 4:43; 3 Kings 4:13 etc.). Og. King of the Amorrhites in Basan. He was a man of gigantic stature, who ruled the Northern Trans-Jordan, from the Jabok river to Mount Hermon, at the time when Israel reached Chanaan. Fresh from victory over Sehon, Moses and the Israelites fought against Og at his capital Edrai and acheived total victory.
