In this video, I discuss how the US stock market has been manipulated by the Federal Reserve for over 30 years. There is good evidence that the Fed and the "Plunge Protection Team" were buying stock index futures at various points beginning in the 1990's, and maybe even as early as the 1987 stock market crash. I recount a story from a friend who used to work on the prop trading desk of a large US bank about how the Fed called them up in October 1998 and told them to buy as many stocks as they could and that "the Fed had their back." Fed Governor Robert Heller gave a famous speech in 1989 that was published as an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal called "Have Fed Support Stock Market, Too," in which he suggested that the Federal Reserve could actively buy stock index futures to prop up the stock market during crashes. More recently, since the Great Financial Crisis of 2007-2009, the Fed has used very low interest rates and quantitative easing (printing new money to buy assets like Treasuries and MBS) to prop up the stock market. In 2020, the Fed has expanded its buying to include munis, junk bond ETFs, and even individual corporate bonds-- all in an effort to prop up the stock market. This market manipulation is one reason why the S&P 500 has been down since 2000, as measured in gold terms. There is no free lunch in economics. Stocks have gone up, but their real purchasing power has gone down. More Fed money printing to prop up stocks should help to drive a long-term rally in both gold and Bitcoin over the coming years.
