* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * An Iowa group claims a video that shows an officer confronting a man who suffers from mental illness is the latest example of police brutality. The video from last September shows Des Moines police Officer Joshua Button walking up to a man at Sixth Street and University Avenue. The man is Lentern Woods. Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement say Woods suffers from mental illness. "This is what our community is dealing with," said Sharon Zanders-Ackiss, of CCI. "And until we can get some leadership in there that can clean house and can do the job that they need to do, this will continue because right now there is no accountability. And you can't keep squashing it because it's not going away. We are not going away." A police report says Woods was screaming and threatening people before police arrived on the scene. According to the complaint, Woods punched the officer in the side of the face as the officer tried to restrain him. Court records show Woods pleaded guilty in November 2021 to an assault charge stemming from the incident on video.
