Recently, during my stay in Austria, a dear friend from a nearby town paid a visit to my husband and me in Feldkirch, which is situated near the border of Liechtenstein. On a weekend, we opted to embark on a drive to Klausen Pass in Switzerland, a breathtaking mountain pass nestled in the Swiss Alps, connecting the cantons of Uri and Glarus. As we ascended a winding mountain road, the fresh air and breathtaking scenery captivated me. The road was occasionally narrow, requiring us to pull over to yield to oncoming traffic. Our adventure began in Feldkirch, and after approximately 1.5 hours of driving, we reached this enchanting destination. The slopes and hillside cottages presented a striking tableau. Approaching the summit, the clouds grew denser, and despite the season being summer, a noticeable chill permeated the air. Descending from Klausenpass, we were met with the awe-inspiring beauty of Schächental Valley. This place felt like an uncharted paradise to me, with its lush meadows and towering peaks reaching for the heavens, a sight I found difficult to put into words. LUCERNE From Klausenpass, we drove towards Lucerne. I knew I had been here before and this visit was my second time. Lucerne is a picturesque city in Switzerland, known for its stunning lakeside setting and charming medieval architecture. It’s nestled amid the Swiss Alps, with Lake Lucerne providing a scenic backdrop. The city is famous for its well-preserved Old Town (Altstadt), featuring cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). If you visit Lucerne, you can explore historic landmarks, such as the Musegg Wall and Towers, and enjoy cultural attractions like the Richard Wagner Museum. Lucerne is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, boating, and enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. It’s also a gateway to nearby mountains like Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi if you like hiking which many locals do. Dining in Lucerne When it comes to dining options, there is an abundance to select from. My personal favorite is dining by the lakeside, where you can enjoy the view of the lake and capture captivating photographs during your meal. For a more Gothic ambiance, you might consider a visit to the Fritschi-Haus, home to Restaurant Fritschi. This historic building has its roots in the 16th century, and it stands as a meticulously preserved, centuries-old landmark in the heart of Lucerne, Switzerland. If you love good chocolates, Lucerne has it as another interesting taste of desserts. Wrapping Up Embarking on a journey to Klausenpass was undeniably a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and if you inquire whether I would do it again, my answer would be a resounding affirmative. Additionally, a side trip to the enchanting city of Lucerne is a must during your Klausenpass visit.
