The first step to creating a character in any Role-Playing Game, let alone Star Trek Adventures, is knowing what's going on with the character sheet, what each moving part on the sheet does, and how one stacks all that up. Who is the character once they enter center stage? a n00b? a seasoned veteran? A hypercompetent Jaques-Cousteau-Stronaut of the Skies?
This Video Covers That first step of Character Creation.
The second part will move step-by-step through a practical example of the lifepath system in motion.

Tactically probing corners. Probing the Unknown. Filling up the Cargo Hold with bulk cargo and Low Berth passengers while you chase after the 'big score.'
The Idea of At-Will Spellcasting is relatively new. But what about the idea of systematizing the trite and allowing 'connective tissue' remain an important part of play at your Table?

#RPGaDAY Day 10: Surprise.
Let's talk about prejudice. When we know someone away from the table, we let that prejudice what kind of play we will expect from them at the table. Sometimes, people we like end up being disruprive players.
But once, I was very surprised that a disruptive person turned out to be a great player, and brought a lot to the game.

"Consent in Gaming" is a minimal, free, derivative PDF from Monte Cook Games that puts forth a new 'safety tool' for RPGs. It makes no differentiation between Convention Games and Home games. It sends the reader off to other Safety tools rather than offer hard answers about what happens to the continuity of the story once someone objects. With that said, its heart is in the right place, however short its perspective may be on the world of tabletop RPGs. This is an extended critique of its problematic approach to the question of 'difficult topics' at the table. I recommend you read it before getting too excited or angry about it. It is available free here, https://www.montecookgames.com/consent-in-gaming/ and as it is free ($0) you can probably find a copy of it in a lot of places.
The Luxton Technique, my preffered approach to questions like this, because I feel that 'deleting' things from the narrative can be just as traumatic...or more so...than leaving them out in a 'see no evil' fashion, can be found here: http://briebeau.com/thoughty/2019/03/the-luxton-technique-by-p-h-lee/
Brie Sheldon's Script Change Toolbox, which I don't agree with in every respect, but which I think does a much better job of thinking through a safety tool, can be found here: https://briebeau.com/thoughty/script-change/

IF YOU'RE HAVING FUN PLAYING 5E, r e l a x (!). This video is about why fast leveling in all modern D&D-derived games is problematic to worldbuilding, and thus problematic to a feeling of immersion in a rich setting. Not everyone has to agree with me, it's just a point of view that I thought it was important to share as it became more and more clear in my mind.

The new Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) adventure anthology, Candlekeep Mysteries, released this week. There's a lot of confusion around what kind of book it is?
Q: Is it a campaign/Adventure path?
A: No. It's an anthology of a lot of small adventures, about the size of an Adventure League one-shot or so.
Q: Does it take place at Candlekeep?
A: Mostly no. The adventure hooks and introductions are non-committal about happening at Candlekeep and NPCs from Candlekeep often don't form the backbone of the "Quest-Giving Experience." While my reading is not 100% complete, I have not come upon even one adventure that takes place within the halls of Candlekeep in a sort of 'In the name of the Rose' scenario that many were expecting.
Q: Is Candlekeep a kind of "Quest Hub/Overworld?"
A: There is a 10 page writeup of Candlekeep at the start. The NPCs therein get minimal characterization (often just a name and a specialty--no traits or quirks) The NPCs in this section do not meaningfully recur in the component adventures. (keep in mind 5E's page-consuming layout with double spacing and huge margins)
Q: Are these adventures easy to slot in to your campaign for a change of pace?
A: Some of them are, some of them aren't. The presentation leaves a LOT to be desired as far as comprehending what the 'point' of each adventure is and where and why the players enter the story. Maybe this was so that players picking up the book in the store wouldn't get spoilers??? this is really hard to understand.
Q: Are these adventures 'Mysteries?'
A: uhhhhh.....kinda. There is not a lot of 'whodunnit' but some adventures approach something like an episode of Supernatural or Star Trek where 'something fishy is going on here' at the start. There is overall less focus on combat...for the most part.
Q: Are there any new tools for running mysteries in D&D or advice for the use of diviniation magic that could be useful in developing new skills to run and design homebrew mysteries for D&D 5E?
A: Nope. Nothing like that. At all.

Hey, you may be familiar with how people use Roll20.net for a classic "Maps and Minis" style experience, with lots of elements of the Tabletop "Virtualized." Well...Here's a slightly different approach that I use that is more in line with a hybrid Theater of the Mind (TOTM) approach.
