What If...? – Paramount / Gold Circle (Joel Schumacher's Breaking News)
In the summer of 2007, it was announced that reliable journeyman Joel Schumacher would be directing an English-language remake of the Johnnie To-helmed Hong Kong action thriller Breaking News, about a television news unit that broadcasts live the embarrassing defeat of a police battalion by five bank robbers in a showdown. While on a separate investigation, a detective discovers the robbers' hideout, but the situation is complicated by an inspector who decides to turn the stakeout into a breaking news show in order to beat the media at its own game. Schumacher would've directed from a screenplay adapted by Alex de Rakoff, with Paul Brooks producing through his Gold Circle Films shingle for Paramount Pictures' now-dormant specialty label Paramount Vantage. No doubt many of Schumacher's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Harry Gregson-Williams, costume designer Daniel Orlandi, film editor Mark Stevens, production designer Andrew Laws, and cinematographer Matthew Libatique. In the summer of 2014, it was announced that visionary filmmaker Edgar Wright would be directing a coming-of-age sci-fi film for Sony's Columbia Pictures entitled Grasshopper Jungle, from a screenplay penned by Con Air and High Fidelity scribe Scott Rosenberg, adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Andrew Smith, which follows the lives of two young high school boys who fight for their lives and deal with sexual confusion during an apocalypse in their run-down, half-abandoned hometown of Ealing, Iowa. Wright's production partner Nira Park would also serve as a producer on the project alongside Matt Tolmach, with Arnon Milchan joining through Regency Enterprises three years later. No doubt many of Wright's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Steven Price, film editors Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss, production designer Marcus Rowland, and cinematographer Bill Pope. In the spring of 2018, it was announced that blockbuster action director Michael Bay and Madea franchise creator Tyler Perry would be collaborating on producing an original psychological thriller entitled I Am Yours for Paramount Pictures. Originally scripted on spec by Ryan Belenzon and Jeffrey Gelber, and later revised by Bryan Edward Hill, the film — in the vein of Fatal Attraction — concerns an up-and-coming singer-songwriter who cheats on his wife with a groupie. He believes ignoring the woman will help him move on from his mistake, but when she begins stalking him, he realizes that his problems won't go away that easily. Bay would be producing through his Platinum Dunes shingle, alongside Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, while Perry would be producing through his Tyler Perry Studios banner. Presumably, Perry's production partners Mark E. Swinton, Will Areu and Michelle Sneed would serve as executive producers. However, no further news would ever come of the project. Attempting to get a film based on the popular Marvel comic book character Doctor Strange off the ground prior to 2016 was a lengthy and troubling development, with numerous studios, writers, directors, and producers coming and going on the project, such as Alex Cox, David S. Goyer, Bob Gale, Neil Gaiman, Guillermo del Toro, Michael France, Stephen Norrington, and Chuck Russell. One of the great what-ifs of the development process was a version that was to have been written and directed by horror maestro Wes Craven for the short-lived independent film studio Savoy Pictures, in what would've been his second major superhero film after the 1982 live-action feature film adaptation of the DC comic book character Swamp Thing. Aside from the project being announced in 1992 for a planned 1995 release, little is known about what Craven would've done with the master of the mystic arts, though no doubt many of his frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer J. Peter Robinson, film editor Patrick Lussier, production designer Cynthia Kay Charette, and cinematographer Mark Irwin. Alas, Craven's take on the sorcerer supreme would forever remain unproduced, as he would instead direct the likes of New Nightmare, Vampire in Brooklyn, and Scream. Years before visionary director Tim Burton would be involved with the Netflix original series Wednesday, he was planning on helming a 3D stop-motion animated adaptation of Charles Addams' beloved New Yorker single-panel cartoon series The Addams Family for Universal Pictures and Chris Meledandrdi's Illumination Entertainment, with a screenplay penned by Burton's Ed Wood and Mars Attacks! scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The project was announced in 2010 and initially slated to be released in 2013, the same year that Illumination would also premiere Despicable Me 2. No doubt many of Burton's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Danny Elfman, film editor Chris Lebenzon, and production designer Rick Heinrichs. However, development on the project promptly came to a close when Universal and Illumination ended up losing the rights to the property, which were soon acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, who would release their own CGI-animated film version in 2019. In early 2005, Universal Pictures acquired the film rights to author Terry Brooks' fantasy novel series Magic Kingdom of Landover, with plans for a live-action film franchise starting with Magic Kingdom for Sale. The Mummy helmer Stephen Sommers was hired to direct, from a screenplay adapted by veteran comedy scribes Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, with the story concerning a widowed attorney who leaves his old life behind when he responds to a mysterious advertisement and spends his fortune to purchase a magical kingdom, but he and his two children get more than they bargained for when they find the kingdom on the verge of chaos. Sommers would also produce alongside his production partner and go-to editor Bob Ducsay. Several years later, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures had picked up the rights to develop the film, enlisting Akiva Goldsman to co-produce through his Weed Road Pictures banner and Craig Wright to perform a rewrite on the script, with Steve Carell starring in the lead role. No doubt many of Sommers' frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Alan Silvestri, film editor Kelly Matsumoto, and cinematographer Mitchell Amundsen. In the early-to-mid-2000's, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures had acquired the rights from Universal Pictures and the estate of author Ernest Hemingway to develop a new feature film adaptation of Hemingway's acclaimed novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, which is set during the Spanish Civil War and tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American man in the International Brigades who is attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit in the mountains. There, he finds a reason to live when he falls in love with a beautiful refugee named Maria, and that life-changing event comes just as he's tapped for a potential suicide mission. David Benioff was hired to write the screenplay, having impressed Warner Bros. with his work on the Illiad adaptation Troy as well as his passion for the source material. Benioff would also serve as an executive producer on the project, to be produced by Nick Wechsler of Industry Entertainment. In the spring of 2005, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio was keenly interested in playing the role of Jordan but won't commit to the film without a director. Warner Bros. was in talks with visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan to take on helming duties, having previously offered him the opportunity to direct Benioff's script for Troy, which he turned down. Had Nolan came aboard, no doubt he and Emma Thomas would also serve as producers through their Syncopy banner, and that many of his frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Hans Zimmer, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, film editor Lee Smith, production designer Nathan Crowley, and cinematographer Wally Pfister. The process of trying to get a live-action feature film adaptation of the popular Hanna-Barbera animated sitcom The Jetsons off the ground has been a long and troubling one, with numerous writers and directors coming and going on the project, including the likes of Joe Dante, Chuck Russell, Rob Minkoff, Adam Shankman, Conrad Vernon, Matt Lieberman, Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Adam Sztykiel, Amy Holden Jones, Jared Stern, and Sam Harper among many, many others. One of the great what-ifs of its development history was a version that was to have been directed by Robert Rodriguez, from a screenplay adapted by Adam F. Goldberg, revised by John Altschuler & Dave Krinsky, and further polished by Van Robichaux & Evan Susser. Rodriguez's take on the property was to be a hybrid of live-action and animation, much of it shot against a green screen, similar to his work on the Spy Kids sequels and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The film was to be a co-production between Warner Bros. Pictures and Universal Pictures, with the chief producers on the project being Denise Di Novi and Donald De Line. Rodriguez hoped to begin filming in the summer of 2010, but ultimately, it wasn't meant to be. Co-producer Elizabeth Avellán cited potentially massive production costs as a factor, while Di Novi stated that Rodriguez's vision for the project wasn't as mainstream as Warner Bros. was looking for. A second remake of the classic 1950's sci-fi horror film The Blob has been in varying stages of development for over twenty years, with numerous writers, producers, directors, and stars — including Jon Peters, Scott Rudin, Joe Ballarini, Chad and Carey W. Hayes, Scott Kosar, James Wan, Simon West, Samuel L. Jackson, and Halle Berry — coming and going on the project. One of the great what-ifs of the development process was a version that was to have been written and directed by acclaimed rock musician and divisive neo-grindhouse horror auteur Rob Zombie, which would've taken a much darker and more radically different approach with the material. As opposed to a gelatinous alien lifeform engulfing everything it touches, Zombie's take would've been more along the lines of a zombie film, with the titular blob possessing the people that it consumes and mutating them. Zombie would also produce the project alongside frequent production partner Andy Gould, The Genre Company's Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten, and the original film's producer Jack H. Harris. No doubt Zombie would also serve as music supervisor and bring on many of his frequent collaborators, including score composer Tyler Bates, costume designer Mary E. McLeod, special make-up effects designer Wayne Toth, film editor Glenn Garland, cinematographer Brandon Trost, and cast members Richard Brake, Ken Foree, William Forsythe, Meg Foster, Sid Haig, Clint Howard, Udo Kier, Bill Moseley, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Daniel Roebuck, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, and Sheri Moon Zombie. Filming was set to begin in the spring of 2010 on a production budget of $30 million, which would've made it Zombie's most expensive film. However, Zombie was apprehensive about directing another remake from the start, having previously helmed the poorly received Halloween reboot duology for the now-disgraced Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Dimension Films, and he eventually walked away from the project: "I didn't feel good about the situation and I just walked away from it. A feature film adaptation of the best-selling Ken Grimwood sci-fi novel Replay has been in varying stages of development since the late 1980's. The story — about a 43-year-old man named Jeff Winston who dies and wakes up back in 1963 in his 18-year-old body, reliving his life with all his memories of the previous 25 years intact and stuck in a time loop that allows him to play out his life differently in each cycle — was originally optioned by producer Lee Rich to be made for MGM's United Artists, with Peter Hyams adapting the script, directing, and serving as cinematographer. When that didn't pan out, it was revived in the early 2000's at Disney's Touchstone Pictures, with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts starring and script rewrites courtesy of Richard LaGravenese and Steven Rogers. In the early 2010's, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to the property, intending the film to be a vehicle for Ben Affleck to star in and potentially direct, with Jason Smilovic having penned the most recent draft of the script. Affleck passed on the opportunity to direct as he was gearing up to helm the true story-based thriller Argo. In 2011, it was announced that visionary filmmaker Robert Zemeckis would be directing, in what would be his next project following the Denzel Washington vehicle Flight. Later that year, it was reported that Green Lantern scribe Greg Berlanti would be polishing the script and replacing Zemeckis as director, although he'd join him — and Zemeckis' production partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey — as a producer alongside Rich, Affleck, and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Berlanti's take on the material would've seen Winston reimagined as an advertisement executive, rather than the radio journalist he was in the novel.
