But the joy at windsurfer Lorenzo Cubeddu’s salvation is most keenly felt by wife Amanda. It's been one of the biggest marine rescue operations of recent times in the North Kerry and Clare waters.

The couple, of deep faith, are now giving thanks to God, the emergency services of Kerry and Clare and their many friends in their Ballybunion and Lisselton home of North Kerry for the way in which all rallied to their side.

The 59-year-old Sardinian native drifted 25 nautical miles over the course of seven hours, after the wind dropped leaving him adrift far off the coast of Ballybunion on Sunday afternoon. When the Shannon helicopter failed to spot him as it passed overhead, Lorenzo resigned himself to death, praying to God and then feeling a deep sense of peace, Amanda told The Kerryman.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard he had been found alive. He’s a living miracle!” Amanda said through tears of joy.

HE had given up the ghost. Helplessly adrift in the pitch black waters just moments after thinking he was finally saved, Lorenzo Cubeddu (59) lay back on the board in prayer to the maker he resigned himself to meeting.

As wife Amanda recounted, the Sardinian native suddenly felt a deep sense of peace wash over him as he accepted his end.

Just moments earlier he had watched the Shannon Coastguard Helicopter approaching nearby, anticipating his salvation as it swept the waters.

“He thought he was saved, but when it passed by without finding him Lorenzo just said ‘ this is it now, this is the end’. He then prayed to God and said he felt an incredible peace come over him,” wife Amanda told The Kerryman on Monday.

Lorenzo went out at 3.30pm on Sunday
