There is a LOT that determines how we self-regulate and co-regulate! We begin with a review of the 3 branches of the vagus nerve. Mike Thomas then defines co-regulation as the effective managing of our autonomic processes as a result of the attunement you have with another person as a 2-way experience. Mirror neurons, or sponge neurons, are foundational in our early development because they’re part of our blueprint in infancy. Therefore, what we call self-regulation is formed by our early developmental experience and leads to how we attach to others in relationship. We speak about regulating self by adjusting our relationship with out own nervous system and changing out neural connections. Relationships are key in getting our neurons to fire so that we can see our nervous system patterns, so that we can then PRACTICE changing our regulation patterns. We discuss co-regulation with environments versus with people. Therapy animals and wild animals, can be part of this experience. There are several layers of memory and perception and this also impacts how we self-regulate and co-regulate. Mike shares a helpful diagram to describe how our different layers of perception affect our ability to regulate. Limbic Body Therapy or Limbic System Therapy is helpful in regulation. Singing, working out, martial arts, and acting are a handful of ways to train yourself in adversity. We can change the context of high stress states through practice and realize new levels of Presence. We then discuss attachment patterns- secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized and how this relates to co-regulation. Attachment is formed in the early developmental phase and can be “healed” as we grow and work on ourselves. Each attachment style has a pattern that is predictable through the next generation. In romantic partnerships, how can we develop awareness about how we’re co-regulating? We need to personalize it to each person’s needs. Mike gives an example of the anxious/avoidant partnership dynamic. We need to learn how to self-soothe and soothe each other to repair. Mike gives suggestions for repair when in person with your partner and when not in person. We highlight the 4 phases of NVC or nonviolent communication to be able to co-regulate at a distance. Heart connection is foundational and strategy is not the first step in repair. We end with an experience in co-regulation and a tip to anchor a desired state in your body.
