Today I review the classic looking Shure Super 55 Deluxe Vocal Microphone. You’ll be getting a very well built mic with a super cardioid polar pattern to help with bleed from other instruments on stage & feedback from the PA, a cut to the low-end to curb the proximity effect, handling noise and plosives, and a presence boost to help your voice sit on top of the mix. Additionally, this thing will make you look like a modern Elvis who is fronting a rockabilly band.

Today I review the Electro Voice RE27 N/D. Out of the box this microphone sounds pretty bad, but once you switch on the high cut, you can get some pretty stelar voice over tones. It does a great job at off axis and rear rejection as well, but the off axis coloration is also pretty rough. Even with these cons, I rather like the tone of the mic when spoken into with proper microphone technique, and I think it would be a good microphone for podcasts or radio broadcasts.

Today I review an industry standard small diaphragm condenser, the Neumann KM184. This is well regarded for acoustic instruments, but I really enjoyed it for spoken word, singing, and acoustic guitar. It offers more of a neutral and smooth sound signature, so if you're looking for a hyper detailed modern sounding mic, this will not offer you that. But if you're looking for a more natural and realistic sound, I think it's a great option to consider.

Today I re-review the Electro Voice RE20 after 5 years of use. If you are looking for a dynamic mic that does great at background noise rejection while offering a brighter top end to get more articulation and a reserved mid section, then this is great. It is another studio workhorse mic for music studios that can be used successfully on nearly every instrument and for spoken word it's amazing; assuming you don't have a very sibilant voice.

Today I review a microphone from David Royer, the Mojave MA-201fet. This thing offers a hefty low-end and a really smooth detailed and articulate top end. It does tend to suffer from plosives and pick up a lot of background noise, but the off-axis coloration is beautiful! Another thing to take note of is the Max SPL of 125dB.
