Sonora, CA --- On February 27th, 2024 at around 11:05 p.m., Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Zanini conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Merrel road and Harper road. The vehicle was a white pickup truck with multiple vehicle code violations, including an obscured license plate and a non-fonctioning left brake light. The driver did not have any form of legal identification. The passenger also said he did not have an ID. The driver gave deputy Zanini a name, but a check of that name resulted in an expired California driver's license. After the incident, it was determined the driver gave deputy Zanini an alias and the driver did not have a California driver's license. Using the driver's name, deputy Zanini ran a computer check on local database which provided a photo, but the match was inconclusive. Deputy Zanini also asked dispatch to pull a Calphoto to try to identify him. Calphoto is a DWM database utilised by law enforcement. With the driver identity unconfirmed, deputy Zanini asked the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver consented to a search, and the deputy Zanini found a vial in his pocket containing a white residue. Deputy Zanini had developed probable cause to search the pickup truck for controlled substance and forms of identification to verify the driver identity. The driver consented to the search of the pickup truck. In post-incident deputy Zanini statement, deputy Zanini said that he believed that the nearest backup to his location was approximately twenty minutes away. For deputy safety, he wanted to secure the passenger later identified as 42-year-old Shawn Karr before conducting a search of the pickup truck. GPS data obtained after the incident showed the nerest backup for deputy Zanini was approximately 25 miles away, near East Sonora. On the winding rural roads, it takes approximately 40 minutes to cover that distance at normal driving speed. Deputy Zanini's body camera stopped recording as he laid chest down on Karr, who was actively resisting. Deputy Zanini's body camera was center mounted on Deputy Zanini's vest. Pressing the center button for 3 seconds stops the recording. Pressing the center button twice starts recording. Recording begins automatically when a sensor on the deputy's holster detects the service weapon has been removed. During the srtuggle, the center button on the Deputy Zanini's body camera was depressed for three seconds stopping the recording. As Deputy Zanini continued to lay chest on top of Karr, video recording resumed approximately 2 seconds later. Due to a buffer feature the audio recording picked up approximately 15 seconds before the recording again stopped. Deputy Zanini radiod in that he was in a foot pursuit, at which time backup units began responding Code 3 (lights and sirens). In post-incident statement, Deputy Zanini said his intention was to lay on Karr until that backup arrived, which he anticipated would be around 15 minutes. In a statement, Deputy Zanini said Karr turned on his side and he, quote "saw a revolver in his right hand, and it scared the shit out of me". Deputy Zanini stated that, quote, "with my left hand, I grabbed his wrist and I could feel him resisting against it. like, in my head at that moment he was trying to point that gun at me to kill me." Deputy Zanini drew his service weapon which automatically started the recording on his body camera. A deputy-involved shooting occurred. Deputy Bomer arrived approximately 13 minutes after the Deputy-Involved shooting. A California Highway patrol officer and additional deputies arrived moments laters. Using a ballistic shield, deputies approached Karr and secured the firearm which was on the ground within his reach. A second firearm was found in his left front pocket. Deputies provided medical aid, including the use of CPR until arrival of paramedics. Karr died at the scene. Tow firearms were recovered. Both were loaded. In addition Karr had 13 grams of methamphetamine in his pocket. Henderson, Nevada --- The Henderson Police Department released Body Worn Camera Footage regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place on December 10th, 2019. On December 10th, at approximately 6:30a.m., the Henderson Police Department responded to the 600 block of S. Boulder Highway in reference to a disturbance involving a male subject pounding on the business door. Arriving officers located a 40-year-old male matching the description of the subject, later identified as Israel Valle-Lopez, in the parking lot in front of the entrance. Officers issued Lopez verbal commands, which were ignored. Lopez continued aggressing officers and produced a knife after being pushed to the ground. As officers attempted to take him into custody, he attempted to stab one of the officers, resulting in the use of deadly force. Lopez was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. No officers were injured during this incident. As this is an open investigation, no further details will be released at this time. This is the sixth officer-involved shooting in 2019. #officerinvolvedshooting #policeshooting #VolusiaSheriffsOffice Deltona, Florida --- The Volusia Sheriff's Office has released footage, including body cameras, drone recordings, and a 911 call, detailing an incident that occurred on December 20, 2023. An armed shoplifting suspect, who initially fled from deputies and subsequently engaged in gunfire, inciting a prolonged standoff in Deltona, was safely taken into custody. During the confrontation, one deputy sustained a grazing wound from the suspect's bullet, fortunately avoiding life-threatening injury. Additionally, another bullet struck a sergeant's ballistic shield, preventing further harm. The incident began when deputies were called to the Wawa at 3400 Howland Blvd. following an employee's report around 4:30 a.m. of a regular customer shoplifting cigarettes by reaching over the counter. The suspect was reported to have a knife on his hip but did not brandish a gun. As deputies arrived, the suspect drove toward one officer and attempted to evade another deputy who initiated a traffic stop. To halt the fleeing vehicle, a deputy deployed stop sticks, which deflated the driver’s side tires. Despite this, the suspect, identified as Dempsey Hadley (DOB 3/1/1967), continued driving at a reduced speed to his residence at 3230 Whitehorse Court. Deputies performed a felony stop on the vehicle, but Hadley refused to comply with their commands and exit the vehicle. When deputies approached to remove him from the vehicle, Hadley opened fire. Retreating for safety, deputies observed Hadley remaining inside the vehicle, adamantly refusing to exit. He was observed setting fires within the truck's cab. Efforts were made to secure the safety of Hadley's son and a dog from his residence. Various resources were deployed, including negotiators, SWAT teams, K-9 units, drones, Air One, and Fire/EMS units staged nearby. Using the VSO Bearcat vehicle, SWAT repositioned Hadley's truck, blocking any escape routes and pushing it into the garage. Hadley then exited the truck and entered the attic. Shortly after, visible smoke and subsequent flames engulfed the upper floors of the house. Despite ongoing negotiations, Hadley persisted in his refusal to surrender. He emerged onto a second-floor balcony, prompting SWAT to utilize the VSO Rook and later a Bearcat boom to dismantle the balcony and safely bring Hadley to the ground, away from the burning residence. After being apprehended on the ground, Hadley received on-scene treatment for his injuries before being transported to a local hospital. He faces charges including three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, and petit retail theft. On December 30, 2023, at approximately 1:20 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred at or near 601 Hartford Pike in the Dayville section of Killingly, Connecticut, released by the State of Connecticut Office of the Inspector General, which released body cam footage today. Rhode Island law enforcement had issued an alert regarding a suspect connected to a robbery, operating a Mercury Marquis with Connecticut Registration C257810. Trooper Joseph Godbout spotted the mentioned vehicle at a Mobil gas station situated at 599 Hartford Pike in Dayville. Upon approaching the driver, later identified as Ruben Muller, Trooper Godbout requested his license, to which Muller responded by stating he did not have it and immediately fled across the parking lot toward a Taco Bell restaurant. Trooper Godbout pursued Muller and discharged his TASER, causing Muller to briefly fall. However, Muller swiftly regained his footing and continued to run. As Muller reached the driveway of the Taco Bell, he collided with a truck entering the lot and fell once more. Trooper Godbout attempted to use the TASER again on Muller. However, Muller reached into his ankle area and retrieved a revolver. At this critical moment, Trooper Godbout fired a single shot, striking Muller in the chest. Immediate medical assistance was administered to Muller at the scene. He was initially transported to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT, and subsequently transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.
