Geometry 4.7b, Proving the Parallel & Perpendicular Lines Theorems
An explanation of how slopes can be used to determine if two lines in the coordinate plane are parallel or perpendicular. We review the Parallel Lines Theorem and the Perpendicular Lines Theorem, and discuss how they can be broken into three parts. We prove both the Parallel & Perpendicular Lines Theorems by using congruent triangles in paragraph proofs. Why we might not use Hypotenuse-Leg (HL) as a reason for congruence for right triangles.

Even if we understand how to solve a problem, we might make a careless solving error. We should always check our answer to make sure that it's reasonable. We walk-through four multi-step word problems and show if our answer is reasonable. We see how to find the length of space on the left side and right side of a centered object. We review multiplying fractions.

We can use positive and negative integers to solve problems involving amounts that increase or decrease. Sometimes we may need to use more than one operation. We review the order of operations. We walk through two different word problems that involve negative and positive integers to show a decrease. We show how to use absolute values and the Order of Operations to simplify expressions. We review the rules for addition and subtraction of like and unlike signs, and the rules for multiplication and division for like and unlike signs. We review when a divisor is 0 the quotient is undefined as we learned in video 2.2b.

We can use tables and graphs to represent real-world problems involving equivalent rates. We fill our table with equivalent rates and use the table columns to make ordered pairs. We graph the ordered pairs and connect them with a line that begins at the origin (0,0). A proportion is an equation that states that two ratios or rates are equal. If two quantities have a proportional relationship, the ratio of one quantity to the other will have a constant rate of change. If two ratios or rates are in proportion to each other, we'll be able to multiply or divide both terms by the same number to find equivalent ratios or equivalent rates. We see how we can use a unit rate to complete a table of values that are proportional. We use the formula d=rt to find distance, rate, or time of an object moving at a constant speed. We can solve for any of these quantities as long as we know the other two. We see what happens if we switch the labels for the x and y axes. When graphing a ratio or rate from a table of values, our scale will be determined by the greatest value for each quantity and the size of the grid.

We can use place value and regrouping to multiply multi-digit numbers. We show a step-by-step method to multiply multi-digits. We discuss the importance of estimating a product before doing the actual multiplication so we will know if our actual answer is reasonable, and makes sense. The second partial product is always greater than the first partial product because it is a product of multiplying by tens. We solve two word problems that involve multiplication by multi-digit numbers with regrouping.

Out of nowhere, I heard a tornado warning being issued on my cell phone and then on the TV. I don't have a basement so the dogs and I were in the bathroom together for 30 minutes waiting until it died down. There's another storm about 20 minutes away that's heading towards us and right now things seem to have calmed down. We'll see what happens. I hope everyone is having a much nicer day of weather than we are!

This is Part 2 of lesson 3.10. Skip-counting is a faster way to count objects that are in equal groups. Equal groups have the same amount of objects in each group. We show how to skip-count by twos using a number line, and by threes. We solve a word problem that involves skip-counting by twos.

This lesson teaches spatial reasoning and estimating in centimeters. We can use lengths that we know to help us estimate lengths that we don't know. We can relate and compare the known length to the unknown length. Then we can make a reasonable estimate. Students use a 10 centimeter strip during this lesson. We use the strip to estimate the lengths of objects in centimeters. We circle the most reasonable estimate for the lengths of given objects. We solve a word problem that involves a comparison subtraction problem.
