How Cormac McCarthy's Divorce Influenced "Outer Dark"
This video is episode two in our series of analyzing the influences of Cormac McCarthy. Today we veer away from our primary text for the series, "Books are Made out of Books" and into some analysis of how Cormac McCarthy's first divorce influenced the narrative of "Outer Dark." All the connections feel very close to the connection of David Lynch's anxieties that created "Eraserhead." I didn't mention David Lynch was also in a failing marriage with a child he didn't really want! Next video up will be "The Orchard Keeper." ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6JYnB9o6FQ

Why did Cormac McCarthy write "The Road?" The common theory is that while he was with his son in El Paso, he started to think about the world in 150 years. He let that idea sit in his head for a couple years and wrote "The Road" in six weeks. Well, today I will be presenting an alternative theory to that story. Using heavy synchronicities from McCarthy's personal life and its connection to his son, the Manhattan Project, and McCarthy's violent characters I drop some far-out critical theory that I've never seen mentioned before! I hope you guys enjoy and let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks for being here! Peace!

Reading is on the way out.. In our post-literate age, video games, virtual reality, social media, streaming services, adult content and other distractions take precedence over books. Diversity quotas in literature and in MFA programs are destroying reading.
The collapse of the university meritocracy created an army of below average writers who can't make people care about their work. If they did, fellowships, grants, scholarships, professor positions, and other fluff money wouldn't be necessary. Do video game creators receive tens of millions of dollars a year in donations or from the government? No, they make products people care about. I haven't given up on the written word. I know books can contend with any form of media.

One of the scariest aspects of our modern world is the epidemic of male loneliness. Most of my good friends from high school/college are single and don't want to be. They're kind, successful, intelligent, & want a family but are having trouble connecting with the new realities of dating. They're also struggling with individuation in a world that focuses only on the simulacra. Today we turn to Cormac McCarthy for advice who features isolated male protagonists in most of his novels.

Cormac McCarthy made a massive transformation in his writing when he moved to El Paso. At one level, McCarthy was peaking as a writer while he worked on Blood Meridian. However, on another level, McCarthy sought a different path with his writing career, pushing toward Hollywood with his The Gardener's Son (1976) and Cities of the Plain (1978) screenplays. The lack of success in both endeavors (Blood Meridian sold 1,800 copies in seven years) drove McCarthy to combine both approaches by writing less layered works that were more accessible.

There has been little discussion of alchemy in Blood Meridian, and today I'm having fellow McCarthy renegade AJP on the show to break down Judge Holden's quest for the philosopher stone, the alchemical role of the Jacksons in the novel, and the gunpowder's alchemical allegory!
