Title: A Series of Unfortunate Events #1_ The B
Author: Lemony Snicket
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Children's Books
Description:
Dear Reader,
I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.
In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.
It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket
Title: Coyote Waits
Author: Tony Hillerman
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Mystery
Description:From Publishers WeeklyPlumbing more deeply than ever the Navajo culture of Tribal Police Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee, Hillerman ( Talking God ) weaves an understated, powerful tale from strands of ancient Navajo mythology, modern greed and ambition, and, above all, the sorrows and delights of his characters. Although Chee is badly burned in an attempt to rescue fellow officer Delbert Nez, who has been shot and left in his burning car, he blames himself for Nezs death. On medical leave and off the case, Chee tries to facilitate the prompt prosecution of elderly shaman Ashie Pinto, found near the murder site in a drunken stupor, the weapon in his hand still smoking. Leaphorn, too, becomes unofficially involved when he agrees to investigate the charges against Pinto on behalf of the latters niece, a member of his dead wife Emmas clan. He and Chee follow parallel trails to the killing of a Vietnamese teacher and former ARVN officer, to a revision in the legend of Butch Cassidy and to the cases unexpected resolution. Central to the tale are two women, one Pintos attorney the other a cultural anthropologist who helps prize Leaphorn out of his continuing grief over Emmas death. Hillermans spare and moving story eloquently illustrates Pintos reminder to Leaphorn that Coyote, the enemy of all law, and rules, and harmony, waits for everyone. Readers Digest Condensed Books. br 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. The car fire didnt kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del, and confounded by the prime suspects refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface, as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune. But the hungry and mythical trickster Coyote is waiting, as always, in the shadows to add a strange and deadly new twist.
Title: Love Overboard
Author: Janet Evanovich
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Romance
Description:
Dear Reader:
In a previous life, before the time of Plum, I wrote twelve short romance novels. Red-hot screwball comedies, each and every one of them. Nine of these stories were originally published by the Loveswept line between the years 1988 and 1992. All went out-of-print immediately and then could be found only at used bookstores and yard sales.
I'm excited to tell you that those nine stories are now being re-released by HarperCollins. *Love Overboard* is second in the lineup, and it's presented here in almost original form. I've done only minor editing to correct some embarrassing bloopers missed the first time around. And I changed the title because I thought the original title (Ivan Takes a Wife) was boring! *Love Overboard* is a romantic tale about a handsome ship's captain; a wary wench from Jersey City; a hundred-year-old, two-masted schooner; and an entire town of shoemakers. There's some getting naked, some blueberry pie, more getting naked, and at the end . . . Okay, I won't tell you about the end, but it's really good and it'll make you feel happy.
I took my family on the road trip from heck to research this book. When we finally got to Maine it was all worthwhile because we fell in love with the boats and the people who sailed them.
Enjoy!
Title: Brooklyn Noir
Author: Tim McLoughlin
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Fiction:Detective
Description:From Publishers WeeklyIn McLoughlins entertaining if uneven anthology of 19 brand new hard-boiled and twisted tales, each set in a different Brooklyn neighborhood, the best way to get to know New York Citys most diverse borough is either to be dead or to cause someone else to assume that state in as grisly a manner as possible. This might be achieved via the old school method—for instance, with a nickel-plated revolver and a heart full of malice, as in The Book Signing, Pete Hamills lyrical opener about a Park Slope ex-pat writer who revisits his now-gentrified neighborhood only to step inadvertently into a past hed long thought buried and forgotten. Or death might arrive in a new-fangled mode, with a scalpel and an Internet connection, as in Arthur Nersesians compelling Hunter Trapper, in which a Brooklyn Heights Web stalker makes the serious mistake of failing to secure his stalkee securely before ravishment. If a few weaker entries exploit the borough as an arbitrary setting for standard cops-and-robbers fare, the best stories concern people in the present coming to terms with the past. In McLoughlins evocative When All This Was Bay Ridge, a Sunset Park cops son struggles with his dead fathers secret history, while Maggie Esteps Triple Harrison, depicting a squatter who tends a broken-down race horse in the abandoned wastes of East New York, takes the prize as the books weirdest tale. br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. FromIts all Brooklyn--Bensonhurst and Brighton Beach, Red Hook and Crown Heights--in this atmospheric collection of noir tales. The sound is right, too, from the understated staccato of old lost souls to the jiving rap of younger ones. Abraham Pearl manages a Jewish gumshoe in Hasidic Noir, and Neal Pollack makes a carousel ride and a scavenger hunt as sinister as midnight. Thomas Morrissey does a weird tale of vampire cookies in Cant Catch Me. The language is richly foul, and so is much of the sex in these 19 stories, divided into four sections from Old School Brooklyn to Cops & Robbers. Brooklyns Italian and Irish belly up to the bar with Russians, Puerto Ricans, and Rastas. Pete Hamill, probably the biggest name here, opens with a signature tale for both himself and the genre, deceptively called The Book Signing. GraceAnne DeCandidobr American Library Association. lt
