THE FOLLY OF DATE SETTING Look at history. Some of the greatest saints made the mistake of date setting. Martin Luther, John Wesley, Isaac Newton, and a host of others all succumbed to date setting in dramatic moments of history. But, to stay Biblical, the only thing we are to do is to say “His Coming is near”—but when we go beyond that and also say a day, an hour, a year—we are being disobedient. Here are some pages from history to help us learn what not to do! An untold number of people have tried to predict the Lord's return by using elaborate timetables. Most date-setters do not realize that mankind has not kept an unwavering record of time. Anyone wanting to chart, for example, 100 BC to 2000 AD, would have to contend with the fact that 46 BC was 445 days long, there was no year 0 BC, and in 1582 we switched from Julian Years (360 days) to Gregorian (365 days). Because most prognosticators are not aware of all of these errors, their math is immediately off by several years. More concerned with the date of Jesus' return than with how Jesus commanded his followers to live until he came, prognosticators went on misreading prophecy: 1000 This year goes down as one of the most pronounced states of hysteria over the return of Christ. All members of society seemed affected by the prediction that Jesus was coming back on Jan 1, 1000 AD. There really weren't any of the events required by the Bible transpiring at that time. The magical number 1000 was primarily the sole reason for the expectation. During December 999 AD, everyone was on their best behavior; worldly goods were sold and given to the poor, swarms of pilgrims headed east to meet the Lord at Jerusalem, buildings went unrepaired, crops were left unplanted, and criminals were set free from jails. The year 999 AD turned into 1000 AD and nothing happened. 1524-1526 Muntzer, a leader of German peasants, announced that the return of Christ was near. After Muntzer and his men destroyed the high and mighty, the Lord would supposedly return. This belief led to an uneven battle against government troops. He was strategically outnumbered. Muntzer claimed to have had a vision from God in which the Lord promised that He would catch the cannonballs of the enemy in the sleeves of His cloak. The prediction within the vision turned out to be false when Muntzer and his followers were mowed down by cannon fire. 1666 For the citizens of London, 1666 was not a banner year. A bubonic plague outbreak killed 100,000 and the Great Fire of London struck the same year. The world seemed at an end to most Londoners. The fact that the year ended with the Beast's number—666--didn't help matters. Satan is the Accuser and wants us to only remember all the many times we have fallen; Satan delights in the days, weeks, or months he can keep us condemning ourselves for what we've done. That is his plan, so don’t fall for it. Resist Satan as you believe the truth; speak the truth; and preach the Gospel to yourself. And whenever we fall down, God says to just turn back to Him and repent right then. Don’t wallow in your pain and guilt and punish yourself, confessing your sin immediately--and believe what God has promised in His salvation. We are forgiven, justified, regenerated, reconciled, adopted, redeemed, and sanctified. That makes us precious in His sight, special in His plan. One of the most powerful habits you could grow is to take this list of the ramifications of having received the gift of salvation! Keep this list in your Bible, at home, on your computer, put on your mirror where you start your day, and in your car. Wherever you need to keep reminding yourself of what great things God has promised and done through Christ's death for us! Slowly as you understand and lay hold on these truths a life-changing transformation takes place in our minds, and then in our emotions, and finally throughout our entire life as we live each day based on God’s eternal truth. It starts as we: Focus on your Forgiveness Because of our sin—we are all debtors to God’s Righteousness; so we need forgiveness. Forgiveness. Nothing matters more to any who have sinned—and God says all have sinned. One moment before your last breath, one thing will matter more than anything else—whether you are dying forgiven or unforgiven. The peace you can have one moment before you die is available daily if you understand what God has done in Christ and if you choose to respond by faith to Him. In Forgiveness, we go from hopelessly offending God stained by sin to the peace of complete forgiveness. We need to experience what the Scriptures often declare—God is a God who offers His children complete forgiveness. Trace with me again those life-giving words in your hearts as I read them to you. Then repeat the truth of what God has done! • “… as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us”. (Psalm 103:12). God said all my sins are gone. Say that aloud with me. • “ Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “ Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool..” (Is. 1:18). I am white as snow in God’s sight. Say that aloud with me. • “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34b). God has forgotten all my sins. Say that aloud with me. • “She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” (John 8:11). “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus...” (Romans 8:1). Jesus will never condemn me for my sins. Say that aloud with me. Celebrate your forgiveness that is only in Christ. Hell is a place where people will have eternally unsatisfied desires for drugs, alcohol, and sex. However, those desires will be multiplied without the means to satisfy them. They will live forever in the blackness of darkness, in a bottomless pit, suffering fire with those desires just eating them up from the inside out. This is the unending consuming worm of hell— the lusts accumulated over a lifetime. Only Jesus Christ can satisfy your righteous desires or take away the wrong ones to replace them with a spring of freshwater so that you no longer desire the saltwater of this world: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God … (Psalm 42:2). Only Jesus can satisfy your soul; only God can quench your thirst. Each day the sun evaporates a trillion tons of water from the oceans and continents and pumps it as vapor into the atmosphere—the greatest physical force at work on earth. Each day the same amount of vapor condenses and falls as rain, snow, sleet, and hail, replenishing its sources. But this is no natural lack of water; we cause our own thirst by our sin. Jesus has satisfying power. In Revelation 16:4-7 we see that life without Jesus is endless thirst, but Jesus has the power to satisfy us so that we will never thirst: … “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, … out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37-38). I am reminded of the fastest-growing segment of cyberspace: the thirst-inducing segment. Did you know that lust and all the accompanying products that develop lust in human beings (as in pornography and all its deviances) is like a thirsting person in the desert drinking saltwater, hoping to stop their thirst? The more they drink, the thirstier they are; it is a self-destructive pattern. Jesus says, “If you are not in Me, you will have nothing but endless thirst.” In Christ, we will be constantly satisfied by Jesus and never experience such endless thirst. Resisting the Devil’s Attacks Matthew 4:1-11; 1 John 2:15-17 As we open in our Bibles to Matthew 4, we look today at Christ's temptation. Jesus was tempted and resisted sin; we do not. We are tempted and sin because we have sin dwelling within us. Sin Still Dwells in Us Paul testified that sin still dwells in us, in his greatest doctrinal epistle, Romans 7:20. Paul affirms that horrible truth, after his glorious conversion on the road to Damascus, after his personal tutelage by Christ in the wilderness, after his years of ministry as an apostle preaching, planting churches, and after writing almost half of our New Testament under the inspiration of God, for almost 20 years: Paul declares: “…sin [still] dwells in me.” Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. (NJKV) Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. (NIV) But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (NAS) We Need God to Deliver Us This morning we are to regularly ask for God’s protection (the sixth petition, Mt. 6:13) because sin is still in all of us who are saved, and that is why we still sin. We are not sinners because we sin; we sin because we are sinners. We are thieves at heart though we may not steal; We are liars at heart even when we do not lie; We are murderers at heart even when we do not kill; We are adulterers at heart though we may not commit adultery. But just as bleak as that truth may be, the glorious truth is that salvation united us to Jesus Christ—and He defeated sin not only once and for all as our substitute on the cross, but also he triumphed in the wilderness, facing Satan. That brings us to our target in God's Word today.
