With the current pandemic we are all reminded of the importance of growing our own food. My wife and I call this our Victory Garden as now we are fighting a World Wide War against a virus that may interrupt our food supply. A Television that swings up and hides in the ceiling is great for people like us who want to watch an occasional movie on a big screen, but don't want a large screen to dominate a room. This one has our television and a sound bar. We turn a winch crank to raise it up out sight. Of course this only works if you have a header beam that you can hid it behind. It would take considerably more work, but you could raise it straight up to the attic which is what my wife originally wanted so this is a compromise.
Here is the amazon link for the winch I used. It is rated for 600 pounds so it is way overkill by about 20x as I only need to pull about 30 pounds, but the cost is low.

I wanted to a 6 foot step ladder that would store flat behind an interior door. Since I was unable to find one I designed and built one myself and am sharing with others. I should caution you that I only weigh 150 pounds and that if you weigh much more you might want to increase the strength by using hardwood, thicker boards or use more reinforcements like I used on the bottom step. Also, I think it is important to use high quality knot free boards for the steps.
PS. Yes, I mainly use this for attic access and I could have made a pull down ladder, but there were too many complication for my attic door and the free standing ladder had more uses in the house. I have several exterior ladders, but very handy to have one in the house.

We need to lift 2 heavy beams up 12 feet. For the first phase of the project we lifted the beams and trusses up with a homemade crane that I made an earlier video on, but that crane had long been decommissioned and the boards used for building so I was challenged to come up with another safe and easy way to lift the 2 remaining beams. This video is shown at 7x speed to get it down to 3 minutes. Basically we used supports and leverage to inch our beam up 4 posts. We "borrowed" several dozen 2x4s and about 60 structural screws. All of which would be reused in the remaining project phase. It is much easier to pull down than to lift up. I can easily do a pull up of my 150 pounds but can't lift more than 50 pounds over my head, so we are about 3 times stronger pulling down. The lever gave us 2x, but this effect was another 3x. Lifting weight over head is very difficult so this really took advantage of leverage and ergonomics.

Times for 20 mile commute (round trip):
48 pounds: MTB 112 minutes (most exercise, safer and more comfort) 10.7 mph
44 pounds: Touring 96 minutes 12.5 mph
25 pounds: Road 79 minutes (saves the most time) 15.2 mph (42% faster*)
*not counting time for any hospitalizations and recovery due to crashing:)

This is my third and final attempt to remove a root from a drain line. If anyone was rooting for the root, I congratulate you. In my initial attempts the eye-bolt would open up or pull out, I couldn't pull with enough force or a cable would break. I finally succeeded in breaking the root so I consider it a technical success. I ended up using dual ¼” choke cables and 2 come-a-longs.

There are now LED tubes that have internal electronics that allow you to just directly swap them in for Fluorescent tubes, but bypass tubes allow you to remove the ballast and save energy. The trade off is there is some labor involved to rewire the fixture. In our case we also wanted to remove the ballasts because they were very old and failing. Fortunately, the wiring is very simple compared to wiring up a fluorescent bulb. Below is the link for the tubes I used. They use 18 Watts which is less than one half the power of the old Fluorescent tubes which were 40 Watts. Also, there is no ballast to consume energy. An older ballast can consume about 10 Watts per tube. It is also good to correctly dispose of both the old ballasts and tubes as they both contain toxic chemicals. These particular tubes are frosted glass, but they are available from other manufactures in clear as well as plastic. At this time they are only $4.35 each in packs of 20. The 4000K gives you a nice warm light. If you want a whiter "outdoor" light, you might want to do with 5000K. The T8 just means they are 0.8 inches in diameter which is pretty standard for LED tubes. Length is 4 feet.

I fixed a car door on a 2006 Toyota Matrix, but this method should work for most cars. I couldn't open the door from the inside or the outside so I couldn't get the interior panel off to get access to fix. All the videos I found on YouTube started repairs with an open door and access. I literally tried everything else. I bought a endo scope to look inside the door and also used a utility knife to cut out a piece of the interior panel to get some access. When done I made a fiberglass repair to fix the panel that I cut. Hope this video saves other people's time and frustration.

Best to stay inside and avoid people, but if you do need to go outside you need the best mask you can get! Besides not being readily available to consumers, the N95 mask is not all that good of a design. They are not comfortable to wear for long periods of time and medical professionals typically burn through dozens a day. it is very hard to get a good air tight seal with an N95 and they don't protect your eyes. I wanted a filter with a large surface area that would last along time. It had to have a good seal and be comfortable. I ended up combining a standard snorkel mask and Hepa filter. With a stoke of luck I was able to easily combine the 2 off the shelf parts together within minutes. This is the mask you want to be wearing if someone with Covin19 sneezes in your face and not a cloth mask or even an N95. This filter is rated at 99.5% for particles down to 0.3 microns and has a huge surface area so it will last a very long time and is easy to breath through. (an N95 mask is only 95% so this mask lets in 0.5% instead of 5% and is, therefore, 10x better). This mask also protects your eyes. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with prescription glasses, but my earlier version is.
My newest version adds a microphone so you can be heard while wearing.
