STA: Translating Tasks: examples & help for D&D Migrants
Today we are talking about how to 'translate' your D&D skill check instincts into Star Trek Adventures. And where those things don't really translate. For an introduction to the core mechanic of 2d20: look here: https://youtu.be/UFHuyTz9kPw ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW12bUYJ9VA
Hey folks,
It's been a while since I've tried one of these Hi-Octane voice over style videos. I've realized that just about every explanation of 2d20, including my own, falls short ....not in terms of accuracy, but in terms of why and what I think really drives the game. So here is a rules-lite, explanation and inquiry-heavy attempt to explain my view on it.

Why are the Monsters of 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons 'weak' compared to prior versions of the game? what forces drove this? what's going on behind the screen and how did we get here?
This is in some respects a reply to IvanMike1968's video on the topic, where he looked at the monsters different character as a 'thing.' I will differ here and show how it is a product of antecedents and contexts, and how it plays a huge role in the direction of the current RPG culture.

#RPGaDAY 2016, for the ages.
This time with a pinch of salt.
Perhaps, indeed, it was too much.
Some ideas are worth trying...once.

A little thought on successful sessions. More an introduction to my own point of view on the topic, and less a complete theory...and thus deeply seated in the vein of the classic 'Brigade Prompt' Style of video.

#RPGaDAY Day 31: Best Advice
Locally, and perhaps because of my wide reach for advice within YouTube of late (shout out of Adam Koebel, and to Runeslinger) it was hard to pick out a specific and unique peice of advice from my own backstory.
TL;DR I'm just not usually the person receiving advice ( but I'm happy to get more of it...I feel grossly naive about some elements of gaming...sometimes. Also, the CGA is a a large-ego-alter-ego...I am a little less strongly opinionated face to face.)

The uniqueness of Vancian magic, and all its peculiarities, strikes at right angles to so many newcomers to the hobby as D&D presents itself as 'generic' fantasy.
In the case of Hârn, Pvârism, like the rest of Hârn, is emphatically specific, emphatically not-generic, and a great source of voice and moxie in answering the question, "What is Hârn?"

A robot-Reincarnated John F. Kennedy returns from the depths of history to ask: Is Traveller Furry? Traveller is a Tabletop Science Fiction Role-Playing game that features several player-character species with 'fur,' after all...

What are Paizo Publishing's Adventure Paths? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the format as it has taken shape across 100 issues? The CGA evaluates APs as an entity...possibly in preface to talking about them in detail.
BULLETIN FOR SUBSCRIBERS:
I am trying to focus on improving my home life, enjoying being a parent, and returning a bit to my music hobby. I'm trying to find a way to commit to finding new gaming friends that are local, and have their feet wet in the hobby -- my old clan is both a drive, and is sometimes more casual and occasionally tempted away by things like M:tG and PC Gaming.
With all this on my mind, the channel is not far from my mind, but my desktop is in a new location, and my workflow is also changing. My engagement with RPG Brigade has been on Hiatus...I will be back, though it is difficult at the moment since time at my desktop is vanishingly scarce for the moment.
Spring is beginning--and with it the call to create and open new doors into gaming. Expect my own take on Sameoldji's "Dark Side of the Hobby" some time in the near future...

USING THIS VIDEO TO PLATFORM VITRIOL IN THE COMMENTS WONT BE TOLERATED
So you've probably heard by now about this one. Or at least seen the reshares. Some additional context will be provided herein.
Y'all know I DO make videos about 'what's a good feat' and 'what's a bad feat.' You know what? I might go against my own advice sometimes. I think it's good to know what the best is, because I enjoy that informed choice to step away from that. So yeah, I'll keep making videos that include optimization mindsets because I think understanding those thresholds about 'good' vs. 'bad' options serves all preferences, even if that's to see when a player couldn't care less.
In the challenge-based culture of play close to the center of gravity of Dungeons & Dragons, the sensibility of creating inept heroes is gaining some acceptance. Meanwhile, lots of groups have found the means to play ambivalent to system mastery or decide with each session zero what the focus and assumptions of *this* campaign will be.
Speak to your preferences as you begin a campaign, and find a consensus about which ideas the campaign will work to serve...
Oh, and don't assume too much about someone else's game when they speak to how they play. Maybe ask.
