This poem is based on an interaction I had with on the the dudes who works at the local Dollar General.
Interaction on the afternoon of 21 May 2023 with the dude at the DG
Earlier today I walked down to the Dollar General –
I go there a lot –
I’m on first name basis with most of the people that work there –
I acquired the items I journeyed there for –
A soda – A candy bar –
I walked up to the self-checkout –
I use it all the time –
I swiped the first item – The soda –
Over the scanner –
I heard the tale-tell “beep” of recognition –
“Please scan your first item,” a familiar computerized feminine voice said –
“Ah, don’t listen to her,” the dude who works at the DG said –
He was passing me on the way to the restroom –
“At least she’s nice to me when she tells me what to do,” I said –
I said, “And she’s not telling me to ‘stay away.’” –
We both laughed –
On the journey home the scene played over and over in my head –
The laughter –
The mirth –
Tinged with just a hint of sadness.

This is the second in a trilogy of poems that I wrote about my home town, a love letter if you will.
Enola, in the Afternoon
The sun passes her zenith, shining down her
warmth upon the C-130’s whose
contrails streak the great big-blue sky.
The laughter of the Elementary school children
playing at recess burning off built-up
energy travels on the lazy afternoon breeze.
The neighborhood dogs bark, back-n-forth to
one another, a crypticly-coded
conversation only they are able to decipher.
The distant roar of a mower coming to life
rides in-n-all around upon
the freshly-cut grass scented wind.
The wail of the emergency siren being tested
reminds me, like Pavlov’s dog,
the store’s lunch special is chili-dogs-w-cheese.

Recent events in my life brought back a memory that I wanted to share.
The Hate Curse
(as told to us by Farrell Cox)
May you be plagued with ulcers,
May corns grow on your feet.
May crabs as big as horse-turds
Crawl on your ass and eat.
May the whole world turn against you,
May your life become a total wreak.
May you fall through your own asshole
And break your fucking neck!

On Depression
Depression is funny...
It can take on many forms...
Mine has been the state of my yard....
Overgrown and thick with weeds
and sticker bushes....
I told myself it was a garden
for the wild flowers
a home for cute little critters....
But there are briers & brambles
in them there bushes....
and they draw blood when you start
clearing them out....
