HG Wells on the failings of Stalin's economic 'Five Year Plan'.
13 July 1931
In this short extract from a talk for the BBC National Service, HG Wells discusses the failings of Stalin's 'Five Year Plan' for the economic recovery of Russia. The country, he contends, collapsed in 1917 and he fears that it will remain in disarray if Stalin does not begin to value expertise above political loyalties.
As 'Radio Times' noted in the edition that covered this broadcast, HG Wells had last visited Russia in 1920, accompanied by his son, at the invitation of the Russian Trade Delegation in London. He spent time in St Petersburg and Moscow and was the guest of his friend, the novelist Maxim Gorky. Wells wrote about his experiences in his book 'Russia in the Shadows' (1921).

Actor George Coulouris, accompanied by BBC producer Peter Duval Smith, speaks to Bette Davis in an occasionally heated conversation about the actress's career. Davis shares her opinions on what it means to be a star after 30 years in the business and is at great pains to counter Duvall Smith's claim that she uses the same mannerisms in every performance. Films discussed include 'Dark Victory' (1939), 'Juarez' (1939), 'Watch on the Rhine' (1943) and Davis's most recent hit, 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' (1962).

Robert Reid (pictured) trudges around a grimy and polluted Salford in 1955 to remind us just how much of a profound effect on the nation's health the NHS had. We watch the story of the growing NHS unfold with a new emphasis on preventative healthcare, including the promotion of large-scale immunisation programmes and the provision of better health education for the masses.
The disastrous effects of smog on the nation's lungs continued to be a major healthcare issue until the arrival of the Clean Air Act of 1956. This legislation followed the severe London smog of 1952, during which 4,000 people died. The Act allowed local authorities to create smokeless zones, with householders encouraged to burn smokeless fuels.

Joseph Boxhall, at the time junior officer on duty when the iceberg struck, recalls the beautiful, still and very dark night and the mildness of the collision. He initially thought there was no damage and advised a passenger, who was holding a large piece of ice, to return to bed.

“Parks are a call to the people to rest and play in family groups, a cure which has been seriously advocated for most of our social difficulties”, so teaches this understated rallying cry from the US Department of the Interior to get “Park Conscious”. Focusing on the parks of Minnesota, the film is notable for its emphasis on the mental well-being that parks can bring, as places where “nature can work her magic of mental and physical healing”. Its an emphasis that perhaps makes sense once the timing of the piece is considered, coming as it does amidst the recession of 1937–1938, a downturn which itself came after already nearly a decade of hardship known as the Great Depression.

In this extract from a longer programme, Derek Hart speaks to novelist John Wyndham, whose science fiction novels include 'The Kraken Wakes' and 'The Day of the Triffids'. As his latest novel, 'Trouble with Lichen', reaches bookshops across the country, the author is quizzed about the limits of evil as represented in his books, and how the attitude of British readers towards science fiction differs from that of their US counterparts.
ohn Wyndham was one of a number of British authors discussed in 1960 report into Science Fiction in BBC Drama. The document, which described Wyndham as 'the best practitioner' of British science fiction, led to the creation of the TV serial 'Doctor Who'. The producer of this programme, Donald Baverstock, was the son-in-law of writer Enid Blyton and the man who, in 1963, eventually gave the green light for 'Doctor Who' to move into production.

Surrounded by press and supporters, Castro answers questions regarding a free election, gambling, tourism and whether he'll shave off his beard. He concludes with 'Batista finished for ever in Cuba.' This news item may not have been shown in its entirety since it was first broadcast and only exists on 16mm film negative.
Soon after growing a beard, Castro discovered its advantages. It became a form of identification that prevented spies from infiltrating the guerrilla group (as they would need at least six months of beard-growing preparation), a symbol of the revolution and, lastly, not having to shave is more economical and frees up time in the morning for other activities such as reading and sport.
