The Untold History of Krabi Krabong
THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF KRABI KRABONG
After the execution of King Taksin in 1782 AD the free
warriors (PAHUYUTH) retreated from the public sphere
and went underground in order to avoid persecution.
Western influences and the rising amount of European
mercenaries with modern firearms in the country lead many of
the old teachers to the assumption, that their fighting knowledge
was no longer needed. Many of them died without passing it on.
Those who still passed on their knowledge did this in secret and
far away from the Royal court. PAHUYUTH, the ancient martial art
of the common people disappeared from the eyes of the public
and soon became a fading legend from the past.

Many years later, during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824),
a new martial art was developed by members of the Royal court.
Its name is Krabi Krabong.
Krabi Krabong was originally invented in order to create an
attractive, representative and safe-to-play sporting activity for
noble people and soon became an element of theatre plays and
stage shows for foreign guests at the royal court.
For more than a century Krabi Krabong was only accessible
for members of the royal court. It took until the 1920s, when a man
named Ajarn Nak Thaephatsadin Na Ayutthaya brought it (with
favourable support from King Rama VI) to the common people.
A few years later (around 1936) Krabi Krabong became part
of the curriculum of Thai sport universities. From there
Krabi Krabong became a popular sport in Thailand.
As a result Krabi Krabong has never been used in ancient
or modern warfare, nor was it ever designed for this purpose.

In recent history it was told to many people (esp. foreigners),
that Krabi Krabong "was developed by the ancient Siamese
warriors for fighting on the battlefield", but in fact there is
no logical or historical proof that supports this theory.
Even primary sources from renowned Krabi Krabong
teachers tell a completely different story ...

In compare to the relatively new "Boran" (ancient) one could very well describe MUAI as "Duekdammban" (prehistoric). Nowadays MUAI is taught for preservation of cultural heritage.

LING LOM (monkey-air or air-monkey) is a weaponless fighting system of PAHUYUTH, executed and carried out with full physical use. The origins of this unique fighting method reach back to the time of the Glie Gauw Pienohng (around 2500 B.C.). First described by the Chinese as a "ghost" or "wraith fight" it was later named "Ling Lom" (monkey-air or air-monkey), due to its elusive character and unusual movements. The name stuck and lead to the common misconception, that LING LOM was derived from the imitation of animals or is somehow related to Chinese martial arts. As a matter of fact LING LOM solely utilizes the conditions and abilities of the human body.
LING LOM was used in Southeast Asian warfare throughout the ages. Some legends tell about warriors, who moved over the battlefield 'like the wind' and even fought between elephants legs.
Later (around 1000 A.D.) LING LOM became the origin of all Thai stand-up fighting methods, such as MUAI (Dtie Muai, Muai Duekdammbann), Muay Thai and of course the newer inventions like Muay Boran and the regional styles (Muay Chaiya, Muay Thasao, Muay Korat and many more). Traces of LING LOM or MUAI as common origin can also be found in Muay Lao, Bokator, Lethwei, Pradal Serey and other Southeast Asian fighting styles.
Armed LING LOM / PAHUYUTH is called AWUD or DUEY AWUD and lead, through some detours, to the invention of Krabi Krabong and its offsprings.
Nowadays LING LOM is mainly taught for self-defense purposes and for preservation of cultural heritage. For more information please check out our history book (link below).

DAB (Sword) is an armed PAHUYUTH discipline, that deals with the art of sword fighting.
GRABONG (Quarterstaff) is an armed PAHUYUTH discipline, that deals with the art of quarterstaff fighting.
DAB, GRABONG and other PAHUYUTH weapon fighting methods were used on ancient battlefields and should not be confused with Krabi Krabong, which was invented much later (under King Rama II, 1767-1824 A.D.) with the clear intention of "entertainment, sport and presentation" in mind.

24 assorted MUAI techniques against against ascending Elbows. Please note, that this is a technical demonstration at very slow speed. None of these techniques were staged or choreographed. The classic Pahuyuth ascending elbow hits during the upward motion.
MUAI is a traditional standup fighting method, that should not be confused with Muay Thai, Muay Boran or regional styles (such as Muay Chaiya, Muay Korat and many more). It derived directly from Ling Lom (unarmed Pahuyuth) and is the oldest and probably the most conclusive of all Muay styles. Due to its unique origin MUAI not only includes techniques, that have become illegal in sports, but also many techniques, tricks and tactics that were never used in show or competition. In compare to the relatively new "Boran" (ancient) one could very well describe MUAI as "Duekdammban" (prehistoric). Nowadays MUAI is taught for preservation of cultural heritage.

GRABONG and other PAHUYUTH weapon fighting methods were used on ancient battlefields and should not be confused with Krabi Krabong, which was invented much later (under King Rama II, 1767-1824 A.D.) with the clear intention of "entertainment, sport and presentation" in mind.

German Criminal Code - Section 32 - Self-defence
(1) A person who commits an act in self-defence does not act unlawfully.
(2) Self-defence means any defensive action that is necessary to avert an imminent unlawful attack on oneself or another.
§ 32 StGB - Notwehr
(1) Wer eine Tat begeht, die durch Notwehr geboten ist, handelt nicht rechtswidrig.
(2) Notwehr ist die Verteidigung, die erforderlich ist, um einen gegenwärtigen rechtswidrigen Angriff von sich oder einem anderen abzuwenden.
