Can't Prep For Everything Sometimes We are Still At The Mercy of our Environment
As much as we as humans want to be in control of our environment the reality is that no matter how much we try we are still at the mercy of our environment. And even though we can do a lot to prepare for a wide range of events, we can't prep for everything or at least we can't prepare to avoid being impacted by some events.
This is probably even more true when you are homesteading and sometimes you even know things are going to happen but there is little you can reasonably do to avoid being impacted.

Sustainable food supply is an important consideration in todays day and age and keeping chickens and the use of broody hens to maintain your flock is one way to help shorten supply chains, cut out the middle man and have some control over your own food security. We have used broody hens to maintain our flock for over a decade and it has proven a very sustainable way to make sure we have all the eggs and chicken we need to feed our family and certainly makes keeping chickens easier when supply chains break and birds may not be available.

Episode 134
Recycled or reclaimed Sheep Barn Build - Part 1 we are building again! This time we needed somewhere to put some of our Icelandic sheep to get them separated into breeding groups. So the solution was to use recycled material around the yard to build the sheep barn.
So the other night we did some brainstorming to see how we could get this done both quickly and cost effectively. And this was our solution, a small 8x12 foot structure built out of several reclaimed/recycled materials that either came with the property or that we had been saving from other projects.
This build will use a bit of new material but the bulk of the build has been reclaimed/recycled materials. So far by the end of the first day (and this video) we have spent about three (3) hours on the build so not to bad! Anyways stay tuned for part 2 to see how we do with this!

Sprouting seeds is a great way to have some healthy greens during the winter. But seed for sprouting is expensive, so why not grow your own seed crop for sprouting! Brassicas are great for this purpose and you have the added benefit that the seeds produced can be used for sprouting and planting the next year's crop. So if you haven't tried harvesting your own seed for sprouting or seed saving in general, you should seriously give it a try, as the results are well worth the work!
