Coming into the more modern era of Godzilla in our retrospective, we have another reboot in the form of the unique reimagining of Shin Godzilla. What if Godzilla emerged for the first time in our current day, real-world climate? Or more specifically after Japan's Fukushima plant disaster?
After an incident involving a destroyed boat goes viral, the government of Japan finds themselves facing down an unknown creature threatening to make its way inland. Complications arise when the Self Defense Force fails, the US intervenes, and they figure out it can rapidly evolve and is powered by nuclear fission. Even more troubling, the UN wants to drop nukes on it if they can't get it under control in time. However, they figure out they can counteract Godzilla's unique biology using freezing and coagulating agents, and execute their plan to a T! But, the threats of Godzilla awakening and subsequent international intervention are not certainly resolved...
There's definitely a bit of cultural disconnect due to this one being more specifically aimed towards the Japanese audience. But that didn't stop us from appreciating the commentary and nuance that harkens back to what the original Godzilla did, or the unique take on Godzilla's evolving design!
