Oklahoma Robotics Tour - See STEM in action as this engineering team performs R&D for clients
Okie School of Adventure spent an afternoon at Oklahoma Robotics. Our tour was jam packed exploring engineering applications and learning how this design team works together to take client ideas and transform them into reality.
They have a multi-disciplinary team with skills in mechanical design, electrical design, technology, controls, circuitry, machining, fabrication, CAD, lasers and software.
Alex's second favorite part was the laser. His favorite part was the people.
We visited FireFly Farms in Accident, Maryland to learn how cheese is made. With just four ingredients – milk, cheese culture, rennet, and salt – all kinds of delicious cheeses are made. FireFly makes cheeses from both goat and cow milk. Join us as we learn about pasteurization, enzymes, curdling, and what happens to the whey that is produced.

We spent the morning with fishery biologists from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) deploying fish habitats on the Twin Lakes in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Also called fish attractors, these artificial structures provide fish with shelter, cover, shade, and food.
The design deployed in this video is called the Shelbyville design. Much of the money for these attractors came from small donations from anglers.

We did a little roadschooling and unschooling in Nocona, Texas where we saw an ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) home under construction. ICF blocks are insulated on both the exterior and interior and filled with reinforced concrete. The result is a building with super strong walls that are heavily insulated. They offer huge energy savings, a quieter interior and the ability to stand up to 250 mph hurricane or tornado winds.
We learned how the blocks worked, how they stack them like Lego, how they prep for concrete pouring and good concrete pouring practices.
Special thanks to Whitworth Construction and shout out to Fox Blocks.

A short drive into the woods from Manistique, Michigan is a natural wonder called Kitch-Iti-Kipi. This natural spring has crystal clear water in an idyllic setting. We had a great visit learning about how the spring works and the geological formations that make it possible. But the highlight was definitely looking into the amazing water and seeing 45 feet down with no problem. Check out this video for details on the views, the fish, the observation raft, and Alex's tip for making your own visit.

Wheat is one of the worlds most important crops and Oklahoma grows a lot of it, so it's no surprise that Oklahoma State University conducts world class wheat research. We joined OSU Small Grains department staff Dr. Amanda Silva, Tyler Lynch and Yuri Barbosa on a planting day for their research trial plots at one of their research farms in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
Watch along as we learn how wheat is planted, how the trial plots are grown and evaluated and how all of this work not only benefits growers, but all of us through improved wheat quality, production, food security and sustainability.
Find out more about their research at http://wheat.okstate.edu

We made a July visit to Horn Canna Farms in Carnegie, Oklahoma. You might not think of tropical flowers as an Oklahoma crop, but Horn Canna Farm has been growing them for almost 100 years.
September is the peak time to see the cannas, as well as their sunflowers, but we got an early summer time tour, including an explanation of how they are planted, cared for, harvested, processed and shipped.
We also got to see their greenhouse from which they grow and ship live plants.
To find out more, visit them on Facebook and their website.

We have taken you on some farm and ranch tours to see where you food is grown. Now join us as we find out how that food gets to your favorite restaurants! We toured the Ben E. Keith Food Distribution Warehouse in Oklahoma City (Edmond) to learn about the amazing logistics and facilities behind moving food supplies from the places they are produced to the places where they get served.
Whether you are opening a restaurant or just like eating at them, you will enjoy this behind the scenes look. You will see the huge warehouse with 8 different temperature zones, how bananas and avocados get ripened so they are delivered at their peak, how the fleet of trucks are maintained, how Ben E. Keith provides services to help their customers businesses thrive and so much more.
Thank you, Ben E Keith for showing us around and teaching us about the amazing work that you do!

This year's curriculum includes Oklahoma civics, so we headed to the Capitol to see what we could learn. Our state house representative, Collin Duel, hosted our visit and helped us learn about the legislature, committees, floor actions and the path a successful bill must take to become a law.
Thanks Representative Duel!
