The Lorelei is a famous German Legend from the Rhine area. A mermaid and siren, she was a peril for sailors (as well as other men) who fell under her spell.
This is a famous poem written by Heinrich Heine in 1824 (or 1822, depending on the source) about this beautiful, but deadly woman. It was set to music in 1837 by Friedrich Silcher, and has since become one of the most famous Rhine songs.
