Crime Survey by SoDo Businesses Finds More Incidents than that Reported by Seattle Police
Business owners in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood who are upset with City Hall's handling of crime and homeless in the city’s biggest industrialized area have released a survey that paints a grim picture of conditions in the neighborhood.
The group's survey found that 70 percent of those surveyed said their workers feel unsafe working in the area and three out of 10 businesses have had employees quit over "non-COVID related public safety concerns."
The survey was conducted by the SoDo Business Improvement Area and sent to its 1,200 business members with at least 78 companies responding.

Bellevue police arrested a man accused of stealing tires from a dealership and attempting to flee from police with his own car still on jacks, according to Bellevue police.
A 23-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning after police responded to a report of theft at a dealership lot.
The man is accused of stealing tires off a black Dodge Challenger, then driving across the street and attempting to put the tires on his own red Dodge Challenger.
When police arrived, the man dove into his car to flee, but since his car was up on jacks to swap out the tires, the car didn’t go anywhere.

These days, a luxury high-rise in downtown San Francisco with units that appear to be mostly empty isn’t an uncommon sight. As a cooling real estate market continues to impact the city, downtown condos might be some of the hardest-hit properties around.
Patrick Carlisle, Compass’ chief market analyst, said that while economic headwinds are affecting real estate markets everywhere, downtown San Francisco’s condo market has been hit especially hard.
“That market has been hit hardest in the city,” Carlisle told SFGATE. This is due to a few different factors, he said, one being the mass abandonment of downtown office spaces since the start of the pandemic.
“San Francisco went from probably being the hottest office market in the country to being about the weakest,” Carlisle said. “High-tech workers were the ones who were most likely to say, ‘Well, I can work from any place. I’ll move someplace where housing costs 90% less.’”

Organized theft rings from Northern California are targeting the vehicles of tourists and other visitors at Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, the sprawling urban wilderness that is home to some of the city’s most famous attractions.
Thieves break into vehicles, particularly rental cars, in the most popular areas of the park and take off with valuables in seconds, Los Angeles police officials told a press conference Tuesday in front of the iconic triple-domed Griffith Observatory.

A Sound Transit employee took shocking video that shows approximately 30 homeless people using light rail as a homeless shelter.
The video was recorded early morning last Monday, May 2, at the Angle Lake station. The unidentified employee walks the entire length of the light rail cars as homeless men and women are mostly slumped over, passed out. There appears to only be two paying customers on the light rail.

San Francisco's once-prized real estate market faces a catastrophic twist. Owners of illustrious properties like the Westin Saint Francis Hotel and the Transamerica Pyramid have petitioned for drastic reductions in assessed values, citing the current value freefall. As the appeal requests mount, over $60 billion in total property values, the city's tax coffers are bleeding dry. While some attribute this plunge to skyrocketing homeless numbers and record commercial vacancies, others see the rising work-from-home trend further diminishing the need for commercial real estate. And as the city watches its revenue sources wither, it's bound to be a rocky fiscal road ahead.

Antifa vandals hurled at least one Molotov cocktail into offices of an anti-abortion group in Wisconsin and scrawled a chilling message on the wall that read: 'If abortions aren't safe you aren't either.'
The damage was discovered on Mother's Day morning when a passerby called police and reported seeing smoke coming from the headquarters of the anti-abortion group Wisconsin Family Action in Madison.
The Antifa symbol - a capital 'A' inside a circle - was also scrawled on the wall, as well as the numbers 1312 - a code for the letters ACAB, which stand for 'All Cops Are B*******'

The full accounting of what it cost the city of San Francisco to provide emergency shelter in the form of hotel rooms to homeless individuals during the height of the pandemic is still likely many months away. But now there's the question of what actual damage was done inside these hotels, and how much the city should pony up for it.
The assessments of actual damage inside hotels like the Hotel Union Square and the Tilden Hotel, which have filed millions of dollars in damage claims following the end of their use as shelter-in-place (SIP) hotels, is still somewhat opaque. But the Chronicle now reports that while there may be damage suits pending from four hotels and counting, a city agency has already recommended a payout north of $5 million to settle just one of them.

San Francisco is dealing with its homeless epidemic by spending $16.1 million for 262 tents — an investment that breaks down to $190 a night or $61,000 per tent per year. The tents will be placed in empty lots around the city, creating what officials are calling “safe sleeping villages.” The city will also provide food and other services.

In a decisive move, Phoenix has made headlines with its initiative to address the homelessness crisis by dismantling the notorious encampment known as "The Zone." With over 600 individuals affected, the city’s actions have sparked a conversation on the effectiveness and repercussions of such sweeps. While the immediate effect has been a cleaner city area, the broader issues of homelessness, including the lack of long-term housing solutions and addiction treatment, remain unaddressed. This coverage delves into the complexities of homelessness in Phoenix, shedding light on the city's struggle with providing sufficient services for those in need and the cyclical nature of encampment sweeps. The article investigates the underlying causes of homelessness and highlights the critical need for sustainable strategies to combat this growing concern.
The city's strategy has raised questions about the practicality and humanity of simply relocating individuals without solving the root causes of homelessness. As smaller encampments begin to emerge elsewhere, the effectiveness of Phoenix's approach is under scrutiny. This analysis explores the impact of short-term solutions and the dire need for comprehensive plans to provide affordable housing, mental health care, and addiction treatment. The story of Phoenix is a microcosm of a national issue, prompting a critical evaluation of policies and the societal will to create lasting change for the homeless population.
