Jonathan Raymond Grubbs was a true waterman. A surfers surfer and a fisherman. A man with no excuses. A doer. I have lost dear friends young along the way and few have had as much impact on my appreciation for growth through surfing as much as this soul. From growing up in Santa Barbara county with a pack of brothers to fishing in Alaska to chase down his dreams as a big wave surfer… if this man said he was doing something he was going to do it. A loving father to his daughters. Jonathan was full of love. The future of surfing in these parts is not the same without Jonathan. It never will be and we can only follow what his spirit guides us to in the water. He was the enforcer in the water but usually not by fist, usually by surfing bigger than everyone around no matter who you were this man left an impact on you in the water. He pushed myself to break fears in heavy open water and left a bonfire impact on the small group of local grams fortunate enough to learn from his ways. Alex Brown has followed the way of Jonathan with an open eye and now carries the torch for the underground in these parts and you can feel Jonathans influence on him when he surfs. For this I am grateful and will do my best to champion the underdogs with Jonathan’s spirit guiding. I live outside of Forks, Washington and since things got weird in 2019, I haven't been out of the state other than a trip to Hawaii and Oregon once. The wind told me to pack the van for the ending of this documentary I have been working on and let me tell you the wind provided. one thing i realized since getting home. I am an addict. I started drinking coffee again and it's messed me up.... like quite a bit. I was running on cortisol and adrenaline from the energies of Los Angeles and a turbo trip up the San Juaquin which left me to crash out physically and mentally for a week in my van in my good friends driveway. The wilderness is strongly calling me, but not today it keeps saying, and a simple surf got me away from donkey island and helped calm my soul today. I'm learning the now is the how and holding back your creative energy is not what the doctor ordered. So after riding through the tumbles of a washing machine cycle of emotion since returning to this lonely town of real folk... I am understanding this... Time waits for no one who is attached to the future and past. Time only waits for ones dancing in the present moment.
