Minute Memo #217 - Oldest Christmas Carol?
Good morning. I’m still reporting from Washington.
Yesterday a supporter sent me a 1917 Edison records recording of what is perhaps the oldest Christmas carol, God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen. According to Wikipedia, it dates to the 1500s or even earlier.

The carol is referred to in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, written in 1843.
I tried to play it for guests at our Christmas party last night, but had trouble. So, I’m including it here in the YouTube format.
Notice how the female soloists trill their “R”s.
