Learn Synthesis with Pure Data S01E12 - Making Our PD Patch Synthesizer Look Good
We are finishing off our synthesizer that we made in Pure Data over the course of this series. Everything is working, all of the modules are in place and functioning, and now it is time to make it look nice. Pure Data patches can be made to look nice by using some of the built-in GUI object properties. In this episode we will use canvas backgrounds, and properties of different GUI objects to make our Pure Data patch look better.

In the second half of this series, we are exploring the KautenjaDSP brand of modules for the virtual Eurorack modeling software, VCV Rack. These free modules are great for modeling vintage video game sounds. Individual modules like Pulses and Step Saw model NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) chipsets. In this episode, we look at Pulses which models the Sunsoft FME-7 chipset and Step Saw, which models the Konami VRC6 chipset. These are powerful tools for achieving that vintage Nintento video game sound.

In this episode, we will go deeper into the fundamentals of synthesis, the vocabulary of analog synthesis, and working with common synthesizer modules. Knowing the vocabulary and what different modules do is key to understanding any kind of modular analog system or any software plugin instrument. We look at the function of a VCO as opposed to an LFO. We look at their common uses and what other modules they commonly interact with. We also look at the VCA and EG as well as their multiple uses. Since VCV Rack is a Eurorack modeling environment, you can plug in unlimited combinations and it is important to know the multiple uses for oscillators, envelope generators, and how they interact with each other in common uses.

It is spring on Wayfarer's Wurm Unlimited Server and it is time to get ready to harvest fruits, berries, nuts, flowers, and other things. For this reason, Wayfarer makes an almanac and show how the game calendar and almanac work. This requires making a book, paper, a reed pen, and harvesting reeds for papyrus. Wayfarer show how to make a press and do all the things to make an almanac and explains its functionality. The episode also contains a deed update and a little adventure looking for and talking about different trees and bushes that have items to harvest.

Ableton Live has a lot of great instruments for synthesis and sound design. One of the simpler instruments that still packs a lot of functionality into its sleek design is Drift. The Ableton instrument Drift has 2 oscillators plus noise that allows for wave shaping on the first oscillator, octave tuning, and fine tuning ont he second oscillator. Te filter section has both a high pass filter and low pass filter that can be used simultaneously. There is a pitch envelope and two assignable ADSR envelopes. The second envelope can also be put into a looping mode where it can oscillate customize able shapes. There is an LFO that can be assigned to just about anything as well. The overall synth has multiple modes, monophonic, polyphonic, strep, and unison that have controls for chorusing and stereo spread. It is a well-rounded and pretty powerful little synthesizer.

In this episode we learn how to make a square base sound using the free virtual Eurorack modeling software, VCV Rack. We cover the principles in making a square bass sound with a sine sub bass and two chorused square oscillator. We then look at applying effects to the sound using the modulation wheel to control both a low pass filter, resonance of that filter, and the pulse width modulation of the square oscillators. Finally, we compare 3 different patches that use different brands of modules. We compare the sound using the VCV brand, the Befaco brand (with a Sickvell filter), and the audible instruments brand. There is one form of ASMR that is called Synth ASMR that uses synthesized sounds to stimulate a meridian response. In this episode, we look at how this is done in the Sound Experiments for Relaxation, Meditation, and Sleep series. In this episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore shows his approach to Synth ASMR using some free modules for VCV Rack. This technique has become a regular part of the series alongside the binaural beats, ocean waves, singing bowl harmonics, and ambient melody.

Here's a patch that I made with VCV Rack that utilizes sync distortion as well as a number of other techniques to create a noisy sound. There's beauty in it and its drone. The fractal animation is from Project M using a visualization by EOS and Phat called Chasers 13 Sentinel.
