It would be impossible to study the history of Haiti from 1920 to 1976 without discussing the power & wealth of OSWALD JOHN BRANDT, whose influence on the Haitian economy & successive governments is legendary;
Throughout Haiti's turbulent history, powerful political exiles have sought refuge in neighbouring Jamaica. O.J. Brandt was born in Albert Town, Jamaica in 1890. He found himself gravitating towards those exiles, and assisting them in many ways while they were in Jamaica. Two years after finishing Wolmer’s Boys’ In 1910, while working as a salesperson in Sherlock & Smith, a popular Kingston department store, he fell in love with a young Haitian female customer, Therese Barthe, who came to Jamaica to visit her father, an exile in Jamaica. The two married shortly-after, and when Therese returned home shortly afterwards, O.J. followed his heart, migrating to Haiti. Theresa’s father died in Jamaica, 1911.
He was 20 years old.
In 1933, Ivan Mordechai Barrow scored a Test century in the first innings of the second Test, which took place from July 22-25, 1933. Opening the innings (he was also the wicket-keeper), he scored 105. He remains to this day, the only Jewish cricketer to score a Test century.
He was known to stand right up to the wicket and easily handle the deliveries of his fast-bowlers WEARING GLASSES AT TIMES and once stumped Australian batting genius, Bill Ponsford off West Indian pace-bowler Learie Constantine in the 4th. Test of the 1930/1931 series at Melbourne.
Barrow was the first player from the Caribbean to score a Test century in England, just pipping his illustrious fellow Jamaican teammate George Headley to the landmark. Headley was 99 not out when Barrow reached three figures and went on to score a handsome 169. The two Jamaicans shared a partnership of 200 for the second wicket.
Barrow’s Test debut came 3 years earlier at his home ground of Sabina Park when England toured the Caribbean from 1929-30. Unfortunately, he had the galling task of keeping wicket while England amassed the mammoth total of 849 – still their highest ever total against the West Indies.
