This is a video of my climb and discovery of South Baldy in the Magdalena Range near Socorro and Magdalena, NM. I was going mainly for the ARRL VHF contest, since the summit has line-of-sight to Albuquerque, but heard no one even after CQs on 144.200. Still, I got some receiving in, and discovered a pitfall of the FT-897 -- internal noise being picked up by itself.
Atop South Baldy is a lightning research facility, where scientists provoke the turbulent skies to capture data on strikes. However, the facility seemed in disrepair, but I did notice a wire grid covering the ground for quite a large area -- that spells ground plane to me!
Down the spine of the range is the Magdalena Observatory, which uses a mirror designed for use in the Hubble Space Telescope. In fact, it was one of their good mirrors...the space telescope got one of the rejects! The 2.4-meter mirror is used in all kinds of research, especially near-earth-asteroid tracking.
Up a little further is the consturction site for the Visual Wavelength Inferiometer which, when completed, will provide the best view of the sky ever taken, better than the Hubble. It functions like the VLA, using several cross-correlated sources to improve signal, aka image quality.
This is a SOTA peak (W5N/MG-001) and I plan to come back to activate it, as well as the other peaks of the range and area...if I ever get into shape. This climb was certainly a start! ►Blog: http://n0ssc.com/

Comparisons between a ATR2100 dynamic mic, an MXL990 condenser mic, and the internal mic on the Canon ELPH 300ES in my echoey office with TV on, Air conditioning on, and the clothes dryer running in the background.
Νοt a particularly exciting video.

I lost my IC-T7H and I had $100 or so, and needed an HT...and luckily the only new HT under $100 is by Baofeng. Scary, I know. But it performs -- in the 100 Acre Wood Rally in the Mark Twain Nat'l Forest near Salem, MO, I used this radio exclusively, and it made the trip to net control every time, from 10+ miles away (given I was on the top of hills and such), with the stock antenna...which is a plus because it's an SMA mount. It lasted the entire weekend. Very nice radio. I haven't tested the sattelite abilities but I'm sure it's possible with this handheld...possible, but likely convoluted.
Works great on repeaters and local chats.
Update: I got an FT-60R for a great price, and is much better...HIHI! Hear my weak signal on SO-50 or AO-27 from W0EEE!

My inspiration: Ham Nation 35: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6thd7EAa5U
In my 4 years of ham radio I have made many many contacts and it's sad to say some of them had not the greatest transmit audio, some of them so much so that they were one of those "1-9" contacts, where the 1 stands for completely unintellegable, and the 9 stands for their signal strength!
In this video I go over a few things that will improve your audio with stock HF radios, as well as installing microphones and mixers, speech processing and equalization. I get to unbox the PR40, hook it up, and demonstrate what you've just learned at the end. ►Blog: http://n0ssc.com/

Totally ruined the screw head on my FT-817, but discovered that some sharp micro wire cutters are the perfect solution to the problem.
