"In 1892 Germany made the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy, thus creating a centred territorial bloc in Europe. Now she aspired to build a Berlin-Baghdad railway - the route is shown by dotted line. With Turkey's agreement a section was gradually built from Constantinople (now Istanbul) to Mosul near recently developed oilfields (now in Iraq) over the years 1886-1914.
Britain and France were alarmed because their companies and capital were heavily invested in these oilfields. Because of this and the German naval expansion Britain formed a Triple Entente (a counterweight to the Triple Alliance) with France and Russia. The closing section of this film explains why this divide of Europe two grand alliances degenerated into the First World War."
