Workshop Project #10 - HP Spectrum Analyzer
Ever since I'm digging into more into analog TV - and also a bit analog radio - I was looking for an affordable hardware based spectrum analyzer. Around here these are also commonly called "frequency analyzer" for some reason which is why I keep using both terms, sorry for the confusion.
The device was sold for cheap most likely because of the sad outside look: missing buttons, scratches and quite a patina... But here's where I come in and set out to give the device a new life.

It was bound to happen sooner or later: I'll have to re-visit some of my projects to tidy up loose ends or improve something based on your feedback. These will hardly ever warrant a full blown project video, but also might be worth sharing. This is the first one of such videos, where I follow up on the vintage headphones restoration, by adding a leather wrapper to the headband. This was suggested by a viewer in the comments of the original video; Note that I still couldn't find any pictures of these *with* any wrapper on the metal band, but it sounds enough like a mod that anybody who had to use them back in the day would make sooner or later. This is the first official "update" video I'm making, with post-project additions, fixes and improvements. It's probably going to be recurring, but at irregular intervals. What do you think?

About a month ago, I was watching a restoration video by @CuriousMarc - he received two "identical" HP 410C VTVMs. While he tried to get both into a working state again, he mentioned that one of them was too far gone to be continued that time: it needed too much spare parts and would have to wait for some donor system. I reached out to him about maybe continuing the work on that unit? I did some transformer rewinding before after all! So, obviously, he agreed and after hammering out the details for shipping: here we are! Let's dig in!

This is my first try in a new format idea: I occasionally repair or improve some things along the way which isn't quite up for a whole video in itself. You know: spend five minutes fixing something doesn't yield a 10-15 minute project video, especially since the voice over and puppetry parts are taking hours as such.
This format should be limited to about 30-60 second long, background music only edits of smaller things that come across my desk, including some subtitles or text cards to clarify some things if needed. Also trying some new things in the video editing side :)

Part 2! And another one yet to come!
Some time in 2022, I decided to get myself a mechanical calculator; you know, one of those impulse e-bay buys. It does work well enough when you are after restoration items, those come cheap enough.
Anyhow, the CRN-1 here is an East German model from the mid 1950s; it features all the regular mechanical calculator features I am aware of and - in addition - the "R" button. It is "CRN-1" after all, not "CN-1". And yes, that is literally the difference between the two models.
This video is part two out of three! The overall project is done, but I didn't want to cut out too much of the assembly process to make the second part into one video, nor did I want to create a 40 minute monster video;
The progress within this episode: Cleaning the parts and reassembling the two counter drums, as well as the underside of the base plate; I'm slso done with the input part of the mechanism: crank, +/- switch, input register display, reset lever and the counter drum are done by the end.
What's left? The counter drum and gearing as well as the output registers. Oh, and of course the case and two excample calculations in "adult" mode... that is to say, without any covers to peek at the mechanism.

As you might have noticed by now, I am collecting devices for a retro HiFi system; based on restoration projects. I can't afford "true classic devices in mint condition". So I go with "untested", "for parts" or "not working" listings that peak my interest. These are usually cheap enough and - when they are at least complete - usually can be restored with a few spare parts and lots - that is LOTS - of time.
This is the story of a late 1970s tape deck by Technics, the model 615. It was featured on @Techmoan - which I didn't even realize at the time I ordered it. It just looked like an awesome tape deck: VU-Meters and record level adjustment for left/right channel... as well als Dolby B.
By the looks of it, the unit has been stored in a garage somewhere; the layer of grime looked to be some soot from exhaust: both oily and dusty at the same time.
Spare parts: new belts, some LEDs and resistors, a new set of electrolytics and a bit of heat shrink. Consumables include a bit of black spray paint and lots of solvents for cleaning.

Workshop Project #15 - Workbenches and Mill

I have put some of my projects that involve fabricating parts on hold, because a lathe is an important, but by far not the only tool I need for those. Lates can - per design - make round things. Or at most round things with flat caps at the end. Yes, I did turn a cube in school, but that's a bit special. I need a mill! And after lots of searching, I found a model that was in the right price and size range and available!
In this video, I'm setting up a workplace for the lathe and the mill, unpack the mill, fix the safety on it (by removing it) and have a go with some t-nut adjustments.
