Should we pursue crazy ideas in physics, or should we stay within the boundaries of what is acceptable and on which there is already at least a minimum consensus in society? I had the pleasure of moderating a discussion between Eric Weinstein and Dan Green on this topic. Enjoy!

Remastered from our interview in May 2023
A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Nobel Laureate, Barry Barish, for UCTV. Barry is an experimental physicist and a professor at UC Riverside. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.
In our interview, Barry reflects on his life in science, being curious, experiencing imposter syndrome, and working in the field of physics. Tune in!

#NobelPrize #ScienceEducation #BoseEinstein As part of our “Nobel Minds” series, we welcome Carl Wieman, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics. Though he’s known for his work on the Bose-Einstein condensation, we instead discuss pedagogy and how education can better serve both students and society. Carl and I talk about breakthroughs, creativity, and whether you can be an expert in anything by spending 10,000 hours practicing it.

00:00 Introduction
06:41 Teachers first need to be taught.
09:46 It’s not as simple as “10,000 hours and you’re an expert.”
13:16 How many physicists does society need?
18:51 It takes creativity to do good science.
24:47 Our culture discourages learning.
Carl Wieman is the co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Eric Cornell and Wolfgang Ketterle, “for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates.” He is a physics professor at Stanford University. The Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative uses an evidence-based approach to improving science education.

#Microbiome #DavidFreidberg #AllInPodcast
David Friedberg believes that science is the best hope to save humanity. He is an American entrepreneur, businessman, and angel investor. After several years in investment banking and private equity, Friedberg joined Google in March 2004 as one of the first 1,000 employees and a founding member of Google’s Corporate Development group. As Corporate Development and Business Product Manager, Friedberg helped run Google's online advertising platform, AdWords, and negotiated acquisitions and worked with Google co-founder Larry Page.
David appears each week as one of the four Besties on the @allin Pocast - one of Apple and Spotify’s Top podcasts — alongside fellow investors and pundits David Sacks, Chamath Palihapitiya, and Jason Calicanis.
He founded and was chief executive of The Climate Corporation, whose $1.1 billion sale to Monsanto in 2013 made it the first unicorn (finance) in the agricultural technology space. He is founder and CEO of The Production Board (TPB). He is a co-host of the All-In podcast. Spanning his career, he has contributed to 32 patents.
His investment portfolio includes Afterparty, Dave, The Every Company, Soylent, Supergut, Medico and many more.
In this extended discussion, the indefatigable Friedberg weighs in entrepreneurship styles, investing, how to incentivize research, and the problems with commercialization of institutional research. David provides some rare insight into his strategies for his almost superhuman productivity, his venture capital philosophy for successful investments, a tutorial on the microbiome, his thoughts on AI and so much more!

Paul Davies is an internationally acclaimed physicist, cosmologist, and astrobiologist at Arizona State University, where he runs the pioneering Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. He also chairs the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Post-Detection Task group, so that if SETI succeeds in finding intelligent life, he will be among the first to know. The asteroid 1992OG was officially renamed Pauldavies in his honor. In addition to his many scientific awards, Davies is the recipient of the 1995 Templeton Prize--the world's largest annual prize--for his work on science and religion. He is the author of more than twenty books, including The Mind of God, About Time, How to Build a Time Machine, and The Goldilocks Enigma. He lives in Tempe, Arizona.
