Today were going to be comparing a model from Thingiverse that was printed with no support material, Cura line support, Cura grid support and Meshmixer "post" supports. In order of best to least finish here were the results along with the material/time estimation from my slicer:
Meshmixer supports: 58 minutes @ 1.41M filament
Cura line supports: 1 hour 8 minutes @ 1.69M filament
Cura grid suports: 1 hour 20 minutes @ 2.04M filament
No supports: 46 minutes @ 1.21M filament
Interesting finding was that Cura grid supports were absolutely impossible to remove and ended up giving a worse surface finish than the lines and post style supports due to the difficulty in removing supports. Meshmixer supports have the advantage of being controlled by you, the user, although they can be a bit tricky to work with. Trade off is that much less filament is used and the supports go exactly where needed! Plus you can target potential problem areas right away.
Printed in ColorFabb PLA/PHA Shining silver at 220*C, 50 MM/S internal print speed, 30 MM/S external print speed at .25 layers.
