If you’re under the age of 40 and you’re listening to this, chances are very good that your interest in the liberty movement was sparked by three-time presidential candidate and veteran Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Paul inspired an entire generation of Libertarians, Constitutionalists and limited-government Conservatives with his 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns.
It might surprise you to learn that Paul is not originally from Texas, but Pittsburgh, where he was born to a dairy farmer and his wife. He graduated from Gettysburg State College in 1957, with a degree in biology. He earned his medical degree from Duke’s School of Medicine in 1961. From 1963 to 1965, he was a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force, before moving over to the Air National Guard from 1965 to 1968. Upon discharge, he relocated to Texas to start a private practice in obstetrics and gynecology.
While he had been reading Austrian economics and Libertarian political philosophy for years beforehand, he finally decided to run for Congress when President Richard Nixon took the nation off of the gold standard in 1971. He lost his first attempt at public office in 1974, but won a special election in 1976, losing the regular election later that year by a mere 300 votes. He defeated his opponent in 1978, serving until 1985, then again from 1997 to 2013.

Unless you keep a watchful eye on or participate in long-range shooting, you likely missed the introduction of the Hornady .300 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) in 2018. Hornady designed the 300 PRC to be the ideal 30-caliber magnum for long-range precision rifle competition. And when we say “long-range” we are talking 1,500 yards at a minimum.
In the past, if you wanted to shoot that far, you needed to employ the use of the heavy-hitting 338 Lapua Magnum and all its shoulder bruising recoil that it imparts on its victims…err…shooters.
The 338 Lapua Mag was designed to punch through military-grade body armor at 1,000 yards and currently holds the #3 and #10 positions on the ten longest sniper rifle shots in history.
Both rifle cartridges were designed for ELR (Extra Long Range) shooting, but which one is going to be the best option for you?
The one thing that the 300 PRC has going for it is the incredibly reduced recoil over the 338 Lapua. Furthermore the 300 PRC was developed to be the ideal 30 caliber cartridge while the 338 Lapua was built to be a bridge caliber between the 300 Win Mag and 50 BMG. Both rounds accomplish their goal, but ammo availability is a huge issue. Currently, 300 PRC is only available from Hornady and through handloading, which makes the 338 Lapua easier to find even if it's more expensive.
Neither of the rounds are cheap to shoot and are typically only seen at the 1000 yard line or further and are not for afternoon plinking or the causal shooter.

There’s really no two ways about it: They don’t make them like Elmer Keith anymore. He was known for wearing big Stetson hats, smoking big cigars, and hunting big game with handguns long before anyone else did. In Keith’s day, handgun rounds were either big and slow or fast and small. Confronted with this kind of ballistics market, Keith sought to make bigger rounds go faster. This is how Keith became the father of the magnum cartridges that we use today: the .357, the .41 and the .44.
Keith was perhaps most associated with the .44 magnum, with which he could dispatch a mule deer at 600 yards. He was also a prolific wildcatter of both pistol and rifle rounds, who was always looking for ways to make big rounds bigger. Indeed, Keith was very vocal about his distaste for smaller rounds, and would even express it to contemporaries such as Jack O'Connor who championed the 270 Winchester.
Keith was born and raised in Hardin, Missouri, right on the Western frontier, and had the opportunity to meet many gunfighters and Civil War veterans. He claimed, in fact, that it was the town barber, a former gunfighter, who taught him how to shoot using linoleum in back of the shop.

When it comes to selecting a semi-automatic rifle cartridge, the 5.56x45mm NATO and the 7.62x39mm are always front and center in the conversation.
Both rifle rounds have been forged in the fires of battle in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan as well as a host of other conflicts across the globe. As a result, they are two of the most popular rifle cartridges on the planet.
Virtually every military on Earth uses one of these two rifle rounds for their primary battle rifle. And there’s a good reason for that! Their terminal ballistics and effectiveness in close quarters battle (CQB) are second to none.
But which rifle cartridge is better suited for you and does it matter?
Let’s take a closer look at the caliber debate that defined world conflict since the Cold War.
Although the 5.56 NATO has come under fire, so to speak, for its terminal ballistics. The round continues to persevere and remains one of the most popular centerfire cartridges in the United States. The 7.62x39 is well known for its barrier penetration as well as its sheer ruggedness in the AK platform.
The 5.56 has a better long-range trajectory while the 7.62x39 has heavier bullets with more kinetic energy within 300 yards.
In the end, the best round is the one you like the most or what you plan on doing with it. For long-range target shooting and varmint hunting, the 5.56 cannot be beaten. For a close-range battle cartridge with battle-proven reliability, the 7.63x39 is a solid choice.

Many big game hunters and long range shooters have battled over which rifle cartridge to buy for their next hunting rifle. More often than not, the 338 Lapua Magnum and 308 Winchester come up in the discussion.
So, if you like long range shooting, and I really mean LONG range, then it’s high time we pulled the trigger on these two sniper rifle staples.
Although the general consensus from most hunters is "Just buy a 308", there are some times where the 338 Lapua Magnum is an effective choice for cartridge selection. Certain African big game hunts require the high penetration and kinetic energy that the 338 offers, while the 308 is simply not enough. Cape Buffalo, Elephant, and rhinos are some of the African big game that would be appropriate for the 338.
However, if you aren't going on African safari, is a 338 Lapua needed? If you want it, then go for it, but most shooters lack the skills, training, and range to practice with such a monster of a cartridge.
Although there's not much cooler than traipsing into your local shooting match with a 338 Lapua Magnum in your cart, most shooters don't need the added costs and training needed to handle such a round when a 308 can do the job just fine. For 90+% of our listeners, the 308 will be enough bullet for you. But for those few percentages that truly need more, then the 338 is ready to make short work of your long range targets.

Do you really need a 300 Win Mag? This is a question that a lot of hunters ask themselves when purchasing a new hunting rifle. The major group think is that 30-06 Springfield is more than enough in most hunting situations, so why take on the added recoil and ammo cost when a 30-06 can do the same job?
And there's a lot of merit to that critique. The 30-06 is a proven hunting cartridge that has taken almost every big game animal in North America. Furthermore it has lower recoil compared to 300 Win Mag, though I doubt anyone would classify the 30-06 as low recoil. Furthermore, they fire the same 30-caliber bullets, so there isn't a whole lot of differentiation in bullets between these two rifle cartridges.
What the 300 Win Mag offers is a flat trajectory and a longer effective range. Many shooters might not be able to take advantage of that longer range, but from a ballistic standpoint, the 300 Win Mag can retain its kinetic energy more efficiently than the 30-06 downrange. This can be important when hunting big game animals like moose or brown bear, when you need that kinetic energy to get the job done.
Although most hunters will not need the added power and trajectory that the 300 Win Mag provides, we will never say that you must get one cartridge over the other. There's a definite "cool factor" when it comes to the 300 Win Mag. It's currently in use in the military as well as law enforcement and the Secret Service. And if that's something that trips your trigger, then there's no reason why you should forego getting it because "the 30-06 can do it too".

The Culpeper Flag is often mistaken as a modern variation of the iconic “Don’t Tread On Me” Gadsden Flag – and rightly so. What many don’t know is that the Culpeper Flag was inspired by its Gadsden counterpart, and both have become touchstones of the Second Amendment Movement.
While remarkably similar to its Gadsden relative, the flag of the Culpeper Minutemen is arguably cooler – and significantly more obscure. While it has the same coiled rattlesnake and “Don’t Tread on Me” legend, the Culpeper Flag is white, it carries the additional motto “Liberty or Death,” and when historically correct, a banner bearing the name of the Culpeper Minutemen.
The rattlesnake had been a symbol of American patriotism since the time of the French and Indians Wars. In 1751, Benjamin Franklin wrote an editorial satirically proposing that, in return for boatloads of convicts being shipped to the American Colonies, that the Colonies should return the favor by shipping back a boat filled with rattlesnakes to be dispersed. Three years later in 1754, Franklin published his famous “Join or Die” comic. This early symbol of American unity urged colonists in Albany to join the collective defense of the American Colonies during the French and Indian Wars. The rattlesnake symbol once again became a popular mascot of American unity after the Stamp Act.

While he doesn’t have the same household recognition as Sam Colt or Smith & Wesson, Benjamin Tyler Henry is a towering figure in the world of ammunition and firearms – and those in the know, know. Henry invented the eponymous Henry rifle, which was the world’s first repeating revolver that actually worked.
Henry was born in Claremont, New Hampshire in 1821, to one of the most prominent families in the area. His grandfather, Colonel Benjamin Tyler, had been the town’s first millwright, who founded several successful mills in the town and invented the wry-fly water wheel. One of his cousins, James Tyler, likewise continued in the innovative spirit of their shared grandfather by perfecting this water-wheel design, creating much of the prosperity that visited the town during the early years of the Industrial Revolution, but allowing paper and textile mills to spring up throughout the town using the power of this perfected design.
At a young age, he became an apprentice gunsmith, working his way up to the foreman at Robins & Lawrence Arms Company of Windsor, Vermont. It was here that he worked with Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson on the volitional repeater, which would eventually become the Henry rifle.
