Christopher Lasch, The Alt-Left, and Capitalist Realism
This video traces a critique of digital modernity through three Zero Books titles: Capitalist Realism, Babbling Corpse, and Ghosts of My Life. In it we also consider how the sometimes conservative and sometimes radical critic Christopher Lasch offered a similar critique back in the 20th century and attempt to understand what some centrist democrats are calling the Alt-Left.
In this video Douglas Lain talks to Michael Albert about his book No Bosses. The book advocates for the conception and then organization of a new economy. The vision offered is called participatory economics. It elevates self-management, equity, solidarity, diversity, and sustainability. It eliminates elitist, arrogant, dismissive, authoritarian, exploitation, competition, and homogenization.

Zero Books Manifesto:
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
Zero Books aims to work against this trend.

If Noam Chomsky and Gore Vidal have a Greek analogue, it is Nikos Dimou, one of the most fertile minds of his generation.
His book "The Unhappiness of Being Greek" was first published in 1975 and became an overnight bestseller in Greece and is currently in its 31st edition having sold over 110,000 copies. An instant bestseller in Germany (Kunstmann, 2012) where it has gone on to sell more than 25,000 copies, the book has also been published in France (Payot, 2012), Italy (Castelvecchi, 2012), Spain (Anagrama, 2012), and Turkey (Istos, 2013). It is available in English from Zero Books.

This video examines the argument in a recent Prager U video entitled "What is Fair?" as Douglas Lain steps in as a substitute for Ben Burgis. Ben Burgis is the author of the book "Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left" and he is a regular contributor to the Zero Books channel, providing videos that examine right-wing and centrist arguments while looking for fallacies and flaws.

As we've seen everything from the random punching of a 75 year old Asian woman in the face in San Francisco, to the murder of 8 (6 Asian women)in Atlanta. How do we on the left view what is a just outcome for these perpetrators of violence?
In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests of the summer do we actually need more law enforcement to help stop these horrible acts from occurring?
Will the backlash we see after this incident in Atlanta be similar to what we saw in Los Angeles in the Karen Toshima murder in 1988? Is there an element of foundation types and lawyers that use situations like this, to brand a #hashtag and advance a career?
We'll be asking these questions and more with the usual Saturday Crüe of Jason, Pascal, Marcus and Paul. Coming to chat with us will be Dr. Sora Han. Dr. Han is the Associate Professor, Criminology, Law & Society School of Social Ecology.
