Tales from The Pandemic: Season One. Episode Seven: #GETMEPPE? UR FIRED
This Periscope Series reflects the direct history of Murphy Medical Associates and their struggles launching CoronaTestCT.com. It is the Seventh of nearly 30 Episodes so far. During this insider documentary you get direct access to one of the leading laboratories and medical services fighting COVID 19 on the front lines. Dr. Murphy and his team of characters answered the call when the NYC Metro area needed testing the most. When Death and Disease are on the Line you don't form an ad hoc committee, you move. You become the first mover. Murphy Medical Associates deployed the first COVID19 Drive thru testing on the east Coast March 9th and served as the model for all other centers. They shared with other health systems how to set up facilities. They shared best practices with Academic Centers. They read the Data coming from China, Italy and South Korea. Not in a meeting, they read in the snow and rain, on the tarmac, in the parking lots and while testing, treating, isolating and tracing. Governments can only do so much and heroes like the team at Murphy Medical "Answered the call".
In this episode, Dr. Murphy explains that just because deaths are going down, we cannot let up. Moving from flattening the curve to eliminating the threat, Dr Murphy highlights the issues that will affect the ability of healthcare workers. These include the executives inside hospitals, insurance companies and governmental entities. The new sites, One in an underserved hot spot in The City of New Haven, the other in affluent Bedford, NY Westchester County- Epicenter of the first outbreak, where many undocumented workers were contracting the virus and not being cared for begin to see skyrocketing demand with over 200 patients a day.
Despite complaints and confusion from those who should know better he persists. Tired of Watching the devastation and death in Nursing Homes and in Underserved Communities he deploys his RRT teams in Nursing Homes where the mortality rates were skyrocketing in Connecticut, despite the best efforts of CT Department of Health. Doctor Murphy immediately recognized the pathology of the disease based on previous knowledge for other viruses. He knew that this virus would infect many organs and many patients needed more than "Just a Covid Test". This process led to ZERO, that's right ZERO DEATHS from the patients Murphy Medical cared for in this first wave.
