News coverage of the United Airlines "Blue Flight"
On February 27, 1995, Denver's Stapleton Airport closed. During the final day festivities, United Airlines flew two Boeing 757's and a Boeing 727 in formation flight over Stapleton Airport as well as the Denver metro area. The intention was for the flight to end in spectacular fashion with "triple ILS auto land" approaches to the new Denver International Airport (DIA) however there was apparently an issue of the ILS's being officially certified so that never materialized.

A stormy summer evening in 1990 at Denver, Colorado's Stapleton International Airport. This is audio of air traffic control from the airport as severe thunderstorms build and move over the airport. Mostly following United Airlines flight 579 a Boeing 727. The audio begins as an outflow gust front begins crossing the airport and UAL579 approaches from the east intending to land on Rwy 26L. UAL579 crew decides to abandon the approach and while doing so turns to the left before getting clearance to do so, and the controller tries to quickly coordinate. The flight then enters the edge of the thunderstorm and the crew has their hands full by the sounds of the audio, and also sounds like they are flying through hail. As the storm continues to build more and more aircraft begin to stack up in the area and controllers seem busy with putting them all somewhere. After some time UAL579 tries an approach to Rwy 8 from over downtown Denver, but wind shear still remains and the approach is abandoned. Finally another approach from the west is successful.
