Small Cell Beekeeping with Marshall and Joe - Episode 49 - Treatment-Free Beekeeping Podcast
Today I'm talking with Marshall Dudley and Joe Bessetti who, like me, are small cell beekeepers. We peruse the theory and practice of small cell beekeeping.
In this episode, I talk to Dr. Leo Sharashkin about the Layens hive, a type of horizontal hive that can be made at home and is more natural for the bees.

Housel Positioning is a topic which is rarely heard about anymore, but was popular in the early days of Treatment-free Beekeeping. It involves orienting frames so that they face the proper direction inside the hive. This is said to reduce swarming and bring about a host of other positive factors. While bee removal experts question the legitimacy of the theory behind it, at the very worst, it should have no effect.
I know I promised links to the document Dee is reading, but it turns out I was mistaken, I cannot find them online where I thought they were. They are definitely available in Dee's book: Biological Beekeeping: The Way Back, page 333.

This is a collection of short videos I took while we were out in the desert working bees after the conference. Just to give you some ideas of what it's like out there and what working africanized bees is like.

Jacob Wustner is a rare breed. He is a born and bred commercial beekeeper who has been working at making the transition to treatment-free beekeeping. At times his story is heart breaking, but his experience offers valuable information and a way forward away from conventional commercial beekeeping.

Conventional beekeeping practices are damaging to the bee population and new beekeepers are often pressured into keeping bees in conventional ways. Treatment-Free Beekeepers of which this channel is a part, is a project I started as a space for treatment-free beekeepers to gather and discuss methods for beekeeping as well as successes and failures, all within a context where they will never be criticized or berated for their choice not to dump pesticides into their hives. It is the only such space on the internet that I am aware of, and has become wildly popular. When I started it, I expected a couple hundred members who would have lots of fun but limited reach. Now it has over 32,000 members and is the third largest beekeeping group on Facebook. This channel is a resource for that effort.
