shotokan karate kihon training
4 Block Punch Combinations Stepping
In this shotokan karate kihon training exercise we are working on four basic blocks, each one followed with a reverse punch (gyaku zuki).
Although these techniques are classed as basic Shotokan Karate training, they are confusing, as after each gyaku zuki, the same arm then performs the next block, so there is a lot of arm switching involved.
In this kihon exercise, we are working on lots of Shotokan Karate fundamentals. They are ~
Shomen and Hanmi
Zenkutsu Dachi
Gyaku Zuki
4 Basic blocks
Leg driving, forwards and backwards.
Keeping the same height throughout the techniques.
Timing
Breathing
Kime
The shotokan karate kihon training combinations we are practicing are ~
1. Age Uke (upper block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
2. Soto Uke (outside block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
3. Uchi Uke (inside block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).
4. Gedan Barai (downward block) Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch).

This is a requirement when testing from 4th kyu purple and white belt to 3rd kyu brown belt.
We have two combinations, the other being, mae geri, yoko geri kekomi, gyaku zuki, gedan barai. both of these combinations work on the same fundamentals, which are, keeping the hikite and blocking arm in position whilst two kicks are executed, shomen (square facing) hanmi (side facing) and making the combination continuous.
1. Start from a hidari gedan barai ( left side downward block)
2. Whilst keeping the arms in the same position, kick mae geri (front kick) with the right leg.
3. Drive off the left leg and take a step forward (you can vary the distance of the step), then whilst keeping the arms in the gedan barai position, kick mawashi geri (round kick) with the left leg.
4. Recover the kicking leg then drive off the right leg and land gyaku zuki (reverse punch) with the right arm.
5. Then turn and repeat on the opposite side.

https://www.shotokankarateonline.com/blog/live-karate-zoom-class-bassai-dai-kata-tutorial-shotokan-karate-online/ Bassai Dai is in most Shotokan Dojo, the first shotokan kata to be practiced once a karateka reaches brown belt (3rd Kyu).
There are several versions of Bassai Dai practiced and there is some debate on the history of the kata, but some of the versions have a very heavy Chinese influence. The Okinawan name for Bassai is Passai.
The following extract is from Wikipedia
'Of the Okinawan versions of Passai, a clear evolutionary link can be seen from Matsumura no Passai (named after the legendary Sokon Matsumura), to Oyadomari no Passai (named after the Tomari-te karate master Kokan Oyadomari), and then onto the Passai of Anko Itosu who popularized karate by introducing it into the curriculum of Okinawan schools.'
Master Gichin Funakoshi changed the name from Passai to Bassai when Okinawan karate first went to Japan.

https://www.shotokankarateonline.com/blog/why-karateka-need-to-hit-things/
So many karateka do not hit anything and many of these karateka also control all of their karate techniques when with a partner. So how do they develop powerful techniques?
Well many of them do not develop powerful techniques, some do, somehow (which still baffles me), but on the whole, the karateka who do not hit things, do not develop powerful techniques.

Kizami-zuki and gyaku-zuki from front stance. Shomen and hanmi are an essential part of shotokan karate, but sometimes it takes a little while to understand. There are different explanations of shomen and hanmi. My karate instructor always referred to hanmi and shomen as, Hanmi = side facing and Shomen = Square facing.
Shotokan karate dojo should place tremendous importance on this area of practice. When executing Kizami-zuki (lead arm punch), the body and hip are in the Hanmi (side facing) position, then when gyaku-zuki is executed, the body is in the Shomen (square facing) position.
When first starting shotokan karate, the karateka will be told that hanmi is used for the basic blocks in front stance and shomen is used for the two basic punches oi zuki (stepping punch) and gyaku zuki (reverse punch).
Try not to over extend on the punches, it is also common to over twist the body in both directions. Start both punches by driving from the back leg.
There are different ways to use the legs with these punches, in the video we tighten the inside of the the thigh muscles on impact of the punches, this causes the front leg to pull imwards very slightly, in my opinion this way is much stronger and more stable than keeping the knee still, or as some karateka do, push the knee outwards.
This shotokan karate exercise is a great way to practice shomen hanmi, so many karateka have little or no hip and body movement, so focusing on this area is imperative to understand the fundamentals of Shotokan Karate.

In this black belt shotokan kata tutorial, we are going to cover the first three moves of Chinte Kata Step By Step.
Chinte (珍手) (Unusual Hand)
Chinte is a very old kata probably originating from China, but there are other versions of the history of Chinte.
Unlike many Shotokan karate kata, Chinte has many circular movements.
Men are generally stronger than women, but ladies kata flows much better than the mens, that's just my opinion.
Men seem to struggle more with the smooth circular techniques.
Ladies seem to flow with these circular techniques.
I know several Shotokan Dojo have made the circular techniques more linnear.
In this tutorial I will make more circular movements, but in other tutorials we show a more direct path for these circular kata moves.
Chinte Kata Step By Step
The yoi (ready position) for Chinte, is feet together, left hand in the middle of the body with the right hand on top.
The left fist is palm facing up and the right fist is palm facing the body.
Try not to wrap your arms around your body, instead have the left elbow pointing directly to the left and the right elbow pointing directly to the right.
