What If...? – Universal / di Bonaventura / Raw Nerve (Eli Roth's Scavenger Hunt)
In the spring of 2004, it was announced that Cabin Fever helmer Eli Roth would be directing an original hard-R teen sex comedy for Universal Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura entitled Scavenger Hunt, which was inspired by true events that occurred during Roth's own high school years. Described as The Cannonball Run meets Caligula, the story — scripted by Roth and revised by The Dukes of Hazzard scribe Jonathan L. Davis — concerns a group of overachieving teenagers, some of the best and brightest students in their classes, who are all set to graduate and go to prestigious Ivy League colleges such as Harvard and Yale, but when the enormous amount of pressure they're already under becomes too much for them to possibly take, they suddenly snap and go berserk. The kids embark on a senior scavenger hunt, partaking in an insanity-fueled night and trashing both themselves and their hometown, participating in a variety of balls-out pranks and challenges such as breaking out into impromptu orgies in front of judges, drinking shots of seminal fluid, defecating in public, and causing massive amounts of property damage. Roth's goal was to make the most twisted, over-the-top teen sex comedy in the history of the sub-genre, deliberately pushing the boundaries of good taste and paying homage to earlier entries in the genre such as Bob Clark's Porky's. No doubt many of Roth's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Nathan Barr, production and costume designer Franco-Giacomo Carbone, film editors George and Ryan Folsey, and cinematographer Milan Chadima. However, Roth eventually pushed the project aside to instead make Hostel, and no further news would ever come of the project. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

A feature film adaptation of the acclaimed Stephen King psychological sci-fi horror novel The Long Walk, whose story — set in a future dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian and militaristic dictator — concerns the contestants of a grueling annual walking contest, has been in varying stages of development since the late 1980's. The grandmaster of zombie horror, George A. Romero, was first approached to write and direct, having previously worked with King on the EC Comics-influenced horror anthology Creepshow. When that didn't pan out, visionary filmmaker Frank Darabont — having previously adapted King's stories Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist into critically acclaimed films — acquired the rights in 2007, planning on making it as a low-budget experimental arthouse film. When the rights lapsed, they were picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema in the spring of 2018, tapping Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt to pen the screenplay. Vanderbilt would also produce alongside Bradley J. Fischer and William Sherak through their Mythology Entertainment shingle. A year later, Trollhunter helmer André Øvredal was hired to direct, in what was to be his next project following the Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and the Norse mythology-inspired Mortal. No doubt Øvredal would've also brought onboard two of his frequent collaborators: film editor Patrick Larsgaard and cinematographer Roman Osin. Alas, no further news would ever come of the project. In the fall of 2012, it was announced that Sony's Columbia Pictures had acquired the rights to develop a feature film adaptation of Battlestar Galactica creator Glen A. Larson's short-lived 1980's superhero television series Manimal, about a shape-shifting man named Jonathan Chase who helps the police solve crimes by way of changing himself into any animal he chooses. The film was intended to be a live-action/CGI-hybrid co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation, with much more of a broad comedic tone. Two years later came reports that the film would be produced by Anchorman and Talladega Nights duo Will Ferrell and Adam McKay — alongside production partners Chris Henchy and Kevin Messick — through their Gary Sanchez Productions shingle. Joining them as producers would be Jimmy Miller of Mosaic, along with Larson. Jay Martel and Ian Roberts were hired to write the screenplay, having previously worked with Ferrell and McKay on the Etan Cohen-helmed prison comedy Get Hard for Warner Bros. Pictures. Presumably, Ferrell would also star as Chase while McKay would potentially direct, in which case no doubt many of McKay's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including casting director Allison Jones, music supervisor Erica Weis, costume designer Debra McGuire, film editors Brent White and Melissa Bretherton, production designer Clayton Hartley, cinematographer Oliver Wood, and executive producers David Householter and Jessica Elbaum. However, in the fall of 2014, Larson tragically passed away from esophageal cancer, and no further news would ever come of the project. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

Years before visionary director Tim Burton would be involved with the Netflix original series Wednesday, he was planning on helming a 3D stop-motion animated adaptation of Charles Addams' beloved New Yorker single-panel cartoon series The Addams Family for Universal Pictures and Chris Meledandrdi's Illumination Entertainment, with a screenplay penned by Burton's Ed Wood and Mars Attacks! scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The project was announced in 2010 and initially slated to be released in 2013, the same year that Illumination would also premiere Despicable Me 2. No doubt many of Burton's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Danny Elfman, film editor Chris Lebenzon, and production designer Rick Heinrichs. However, development on the project promptly came to a close when Universal and Illumination ended up losing the rights to the property, which were soon acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, who would release their own CGI-animated film version in 2019. In the fall of 2009, it was announced that NBA legend LeBron James would be playing himself in a sports comedy for Universal Pictures entitled Fantasy Basketball Camp, to be scripted by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel and produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. The story concerns five men from different backgrounds who come to Las Vegas to live out their fantasy by attending James' Adult Basketball Camp. While it should be enough that these dreamers get to breathe the same oxygen as their hero, the campers end up dragging James into their various life issues, ranging from the serious to the completely idiotic. The following year, Undercover Brother helmer Malcolm D. Lee came onboard to direct, with Peter Steinfeld being tapped to provide a script rewrite. No doubt many of Lee's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer David Newman, film editor Paul Millspaugh, production designer Keith Brian Burns, and cinematographer Greg Gardiner. In 2013, it was reported that Kevin Hart would play James' fictional younger brother — who wants a chance to prove himself — in the film, also serving as a producer through his newly formed production company Hartbeat Productions and revising the script alongside Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells and Chris Spencer. In 2016, Mark Wahlberg was set to star in the film alongside Hart and James, also joining as a producer alongside Stephen Levinson through their respective Closest to the Hole Productions and Leverage Entertainment banners, and Entourage creator Doug Ellin was hired for yet another rewrite of the script. Considered to be one of the greatest American novels of all time is Cormac McCarthy's magnum opus Blood Meridian. Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850's, the anti-western traces the fortunes of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old Tennessee native who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indigenous people are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving. Numerous attempts have been made to adapt the novel into a feature film, but none have ever succeeded, with numerous writers and directors coming and going over the years, including Andrew Dominik, Todd Field, James Franco, Michael Haneke, John Hillcoat, Tommy Lee Jones, Lynne Ramsay, and Steve Tesich. One of the great what-ifs of the development process was a version that was to have been directed by visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott, with William Monahan adapting the screenplay and the now-disgraced Scott Rudin producing. No doubt many of Scott's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Harry Gregson-Williams, costume designer Janty Yates, film editor Claire Simpson, production designer Arthur Max, and cinematographer John Mathieson. Scott intended to stay true to the vicious and unrelenting brutality of the novel, even claiming that the grisly content would've resulted in the film getting a "double-X" rating, but alas, the disturbing and graphic violence made studios weary of ever making the film. Sometime in the 2000's, it was reported that an original fantasy comedy entitled Wish List was in development at Walt Disney Pictures, with the screenplay penned by Mrs. Doubtfire scribe Randi Mayem Singer concerning an ambitious career-driven man who lost his inner child at the age of ten, due to the ten wishes he made back then never coming true. It turns out that the coin upon which he wished got stuck in the wishing well and never reached the bottom. When the coin suddenly becomes dislodged, floating to the bottom of the pool, the uptight professional must deal with all ten of his childhood wishes coming true, all at the same time. The film initially had Andy Fickman sitting in the director's chair, in what would've been his fourth film for Disney after The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, and You Again, with Mayhem Pictures' Gordon Gray and Mark Ciardi producing. In 2011, it was announced that Kung Fu Panda writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger would be providing a rewrite, specifically retooling script for Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon, who would star in the film. Furthermore, Fickman would remain onboard mainly as a producer through his Oops Doughnuts Productions shingle. In April of 2012, veteran comedy writer Paul Feig was hired to direct, fresh off of the critical and commercial success of Bridesmaids, with filming scheduled to begin later that year as Disney was eyeing a release sometime in 2013. No doubt many of Feig's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Theodore Shapiro, music supervisor Erica Weis, costume designer Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, film editors Brent White and Melissa Bretherton, production designer Jefferson Sage, and cinematographer Robert Yeoman. However, no further news ever came of the project, with Feig instead moving on to helm action comedies such as The Heat and Spy for 20th Century Fox. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese had been developing a biopic on famed entertainer Frank Sinatra from the early 2000's until 2017, and unlike many, this would've been the first to have featured the official involvement of the Sinatra family and estate, with Sinatra's daughter Tina serving as an executive producer. Scorsese would also produce alongside the now-disgraced Scott Rudin and Mandalay Entertainment's Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman. Reportedly, Scorsese was eyeing Leonardo DiCaprio to play Sinatra in his younger years and Al Pacino to play him in his older years, as well as Robert de Niro as Dean Martin. Field of Dreams helmer Phil Alden Robinson wrote the initial draft of the screenplay, which was subsequently rewritten by Captain Phillips scribe Billy Ray and later The Yiddish Policemen's Union author Michael Chabon. No doubt many of Scorsese's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Robbie Robertson, music supervisors Randall Poster and George Drakoulias, costume designer Sandy Powell, visual effects supervisor Robert Legato, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, production designer Dante Ferretti, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. However, Scorsese eventually abandoned the project, much to his disappointment, as the approach that he wanted to take — a brutally honest look at Sinatra that would explore both his positives and his negatives — was the exact opposite of what the Sinatra estate wanted, which was a more straightforward and sanitized portrait of the man. One of the many unrealized projects of Academy Award-winning directorr Steven Spielberg is a sci-fi drama entitled Chocky, based on the novel of the same name by John Wyndham, which revolves around a twelve-year-old boy named Matthew Gore, whose consciousness is taken over by an extraterrestrial entity. His father David's suspicions are triggered when his son begins to argue with his mysterious imaginary friend. Initially housed at Paramount Pictures, Spielberg and his production company Amblin Entertainment later took it to DreamWorks Pictures, with Disney's Touchstone Pictures handling distribution. No doubt many of Spielberg's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer John Williams, costume designer Joanna Johnston, film editor Michael Kahn, production designer Rick Carter, and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński. In the summer of 2014, it was announced that visionary filmmaker Edgar Wright would be directing a coming-of-age sci-fi film for Sony's Columbia Pictures entitled Grasshopper Jungle, from a screenplay penned by Con Air and High Fidelity scribe Scott Rosenberg, adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Andrew Smith, which follows the lives of two young high school boys who fight for their lives and deal with sexual confusion during an apocalypse in their run-down, half-abandoned hometown of Ealing, Iowa. Wright's production partner Nira Park would also serve as a producer on the project alongside Matt Tolmach, with Arnon Milchan joining through Regency Enterprises three years later. No doubt many of Wright's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Steven Price, film editors Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss, production designer Marcus Rowland, and cinematographer Bill Pope.
