In the realm of musical discourse, there exists a contentious debate regarding the fate of instruments that have fallen out of use. Detractors argue that such instruments lack merit and no longer serve a purpose in contemporary musical landscapes.
It is intriguing to consider the case of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose music epitomizes the essence of the Baroque period. In the decades following his death, Bach's extraordinary oeuvre fell into neglect and was deemed unfashionable. Was it the result of his inadequacy or of our ignorance?
The story took an unexpected turn when Felix Mendelssohn, a visionary composer and conductor, championed Bach's music and reintroduced it to the general audience. Mendelssohn's performances of Bach's works, most notably the iconic St. Matthew Passion, ignited a fervor for this extraordinary composer and his Baroque compositions.
In light of these historical circumstances, it becomes evident that the argument dismissing out-of-use instruments and repertoire is fundamentally flawed. The Baroque era, with its rich tapestry of compositions and distinctive instrumental models, demonstrates that the passing of time does not diminish the quality or relevance of artistic creations. Rather, it underscores the importance of passionate advocates who tirelessly strive to uncover hidden gems, breathing new life into forgotten musical treasures. In the beginning it was just the Early Music, mostly frowned upon among the more "academic" musical elites, but today Early Music is sending ripples even in that direction.
Reviving our cultural roots is not simply an exercise in nostalgia, but a vital endeavor that enriches our understanding of musical history and deepens our appreciation for the interconnectedness of diverse artistic traditions.
That takes a different mindset. That mindset represents the culture of people like us. And that's what da spalla signifies. Not just a wooden toy of weird dimensions, but a page in music culture revived, plus a different approach to being an independent music professional.
I hope you see some value in this for yourself. More and more string players do.

Professional, classical violinist, violist, potentially a violoncellist da spalla: do you want your music to be heard?
Without backstage politics, without having to win competitions, without having to constantly please someone you maybe do not particulartly adore?
The good news is, all of the above are the attributes of the jurassic system in classical music, and it is coming to an end. There is a much better way to be a musician today. And this is what this video is about.
Even if right now you have not that many concerts (if any). Even if you do not have a millionnaire sponsor to buy you an instrument. Even if right now you are not being represented by one of the top concert managements.
Watch this video. And then let me know what your musical aspirations are, and what would be the instrument that is the right fit for YOU:

What if your colleagues are against your playing the violoncello da spalla, and they made you believe that in your country, this instrument can never be revived, and if you begin playing it you will be severely punished by musicians? This video is for you if you are a Baroque, classical or chamber violinist or violist and you fell in love with the instrument so many musicians loved, including J.S.Bach

You have far higher chances of getting noticed when you stand out, rather than when you fit in.

In his book Story of Art, Ernst Gombrich brilliantly demonstrates that any artists we still remember were different in one or another way. In violin making and music in general it is no different. However, sometimes competitions seem to discourage freedom of creativity. In this episode on Luthiers & Legacy Podcast, you will learn how winning at a completion lead to my momentarily losing passion for violin making at the start of my career, and how I found it back and never lost ever since.
You will find a ton more inspiring information in my upcoming book https://bookonviolinmaking.com
