We count up to 5 with words and numbers. We write 5 and five, right and left-handed. We circle all the sets of five. We match apples with the correct number of 3, 4, or 5. We trace the number 5 with our right and left finger. We write the number 5 and the word five with our right hand. We write the number 5 and the word five with our left hand. This lesson features work on subitizing the number five. To subitize is to make an immediate and accurate reckoning of (the number of items in a group or sample) without needing to pause and actually count them. Most adults have experienced subitizing as they look at the five-dot arrangement on a number cube or a playing card.

An explanation of the relationship between circumference, diameter, and Pi (π). We use cardboard, a compass, measuring tape, scissors, and a straightedge to construct and develop Pi. We make a "Pi measuring tape" with ribbon to find the diameter of a sphere. We construct inscribed and circumscribed polygons to estimate the value of Pi, then write our results as an inequality.

Addition and subtraction number sentences are called equations. Equations have an equal sign. They show the parts and whole of a problem. An equation can be used to show a problem. In this lesson we use a box as a missing addend to prepare the student to use variables to take the place of an unknown amount. We solve 6 word problems that involve finding a sum or difference.

We can use a model to see what's happening when we multiply a fraction by a whole number. We can shade fraction circles or fraction strips, and look for a pattern. We divide a whole into equal parts shown by the denominator. We shade the number of equal parts shown by the numerator. Then, the whole number factor tells us how many strips to make. The product is the whole number of the shaded parts written over the denominator. We solve two word problems involving multiplication of a fraction and a whole number. We use higher order thinking skills to find an unknown whole number, unknown numerator, and an unknown denominator in equations.

A line plot is a graph that shows frequency of data along a number line. We can easily see data or compare amounts. An average (also called a mean) is the total sum of number values divided by the number of data. A line plot can help us find an average with data given in fractions. We can find how many times each fraction is recorded on the line plot, find the sub-total amount for each fraction, and then find the total amount for all. Then, we can divide the total by the number of data recorded to find the average. We can use the Order of Operations to find the average of fractional amounts. By organizing the given data into a line plot makes it easier to calculate the average in small steps. This is very helpful when given fractional amounts, but works with decimals and whole numbers too. Remember that fractions are division problems. After we add all the data numbers to get a total and need to divide by the amount of addends to get the average, we can use the dividend as the numerator and the divisor as the denominator. We think of the fraction bar as a division sign. We solve 3 word problems that involve line plots and fractional averages.

Sometimes a word problem will involve more than one fraction operation, more than 1 step. We can use parentheses to group different operations. According to the order of operations, we perform operations within parentheses first. The order of operations is Parentheses, Exponents, Multiply or Divide left to right (whichever comes first), Add or Subtract left to right (whichever comes first). We can remember the order of operations with the word PEMDAS. We solve three word problems to show using PEMDAS.
