Last week, after the US president made repeated statements about the importance of “securing” Syria’s oil, the Russian military released satellite intelligence on an illegal Pentagon and CIA-sponsored oil smuggling scheme which the defence ministry described as nothing short of “international state banditry” on Washington’s part.
US President Donald Trump has reiterated the US’s lack of interest in patrolling the Syrian-Turkish border, saying the US’s main interest was in controlling the country’s oil.
“The ceasefire has held very nicely. We’ve kept the oil. We’ve stayed back and kept the oil. Other people can patrol the border of Syria, frankly, and Turkey, let them - they’ve been fighting for a thousand years, let them do the border, we don’t want to do that. We want to bring our soldiers home. But we did leave soldiers because we’re keeping the oil. I like oil. We’re keeping the oil,” Trump said, speaking to reporters on the White House lawn on Friday.
Trump said the US was working effectively with both its Kurdish and Turkish partners, and recalled the recent operation to take out former Daesh* leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, whom he called “maybe the number one terrorist for the last fifty years”. The president added that al-Baghdadi’s second-in-command had also been killed, and said that the US already has “number three in our sights”.
Russia and Turkey began join patrols in northern Syria on Friday, in line with an agreement between Presidents Putin and Erdogan last month facilitating the withdrawal of Kurdish militants to 30 km from the Turkish-Syrian border area in exchange for a halt to the Turkish military operation.
Turkey launched an invasion of northern Syria on October 9, in a stated bid to oust both Daesh terrorists and Kurdish militia, whom Ankara also classifies as terrorists, sparking outrage and condemnation from Turkey’s NATO allies. Turkey’s operation was preceded by the withdrawal of US forces from the part of northern Syria later targeted. President Trump’s critics accused the president of abandoning the US’s Syrian Kurdish allies, who played a major role in liberating northeastern Syria from Daesh between 2015 and 2017. Following the start of the Syria operation, multiple Syrian Kurdish settlements have pledged allegiance to Damascus and called on the Syrian Army to protect them.
Prior to his comments Friday, President Trump had repeatedly referred to the need to secure and hold Syria’s oil resources, with Pentagon Chief Mark Esper confirming Thursday that US troops’ mission was to “deny” the oil to Daesh and “other actors in the region”.
Trump repeatedly criticised US foreign policy during the 2016 campaign, and even during his days as a private citizen. In 2011, Trump urged the Obama administration to keep troops in Iraq and “keep the oil”. In 2016, he reiterated the need to “take the oil” in Iraq, saying the move would be “reimbursing ourselves,” and “not stealing.”
Much of Syria’s oil and gas reserves are concentrated in the country’s northeast. According to a 2011 US Energy Information Administration report, Syria’s oil output amounted to roughly 400,000 barrels a day in 2010, with about a quarter of this production sold abroad. The country was estimated to have some 2.5 billion barrels of petroleum reserves as of January 1, 2011.
Syria’s proven natural gas reserves were then estimated at 8.5 trillion cubic feet, with the country consuming most of its gas output domestically at fuel power stations, and became a net gas importer in 2008. Since the start of the foreign-backed civil conflict in 2011, official exports have fallen to nearly zero. During the war, multiple parties, including Daesh and the US, engaged in the illegal smuggling of Syrian oil and its export abroad.
In late 2015, Russian airstrikes eliminated over a thousand fuel trucks carrying Daesh oil out of Syria. Last week, the Russian defence ministry reported on a separate major $30 million a month oil smuggling operation being carried out by “leading American corporations” in coordination with private military contractors, US special forces and air power.

A box full of genetically modified mosquitos successfully vaccinated a human against malaria in a trial funded by the National Institute of Health
The study involved about 200 hungry mosquitos biting a human subject's arm. Human participants placed their arms directly over a small box full of the bloodsuckers.
"We use the mosquitoes like they're 1,000 small flying syringes," said researcher Dr. Sean Murphy, as reported by NPR.
Three to five "vaccinations" took place over 30-day intervals.
The mosquitos gave minor versions of malaria that didn't make people sick, but gave them antibodies. Efficacy from the antibodies lasted a few months.
"Half of the individuals in each vaccine group did not develop detectable P. falciparum infection, and a subset of these individuals was subjected to a second CHMI 6 months later and remained partially protected. These results support further development of genetically attenuated sporozoites as potential malaria vaccines," researchers concluded.
Carolina Reid was one of twenty-six participants in the study.
"My whole forearm swelled and blistered. My family was laughing, asking like, `why are you subjecting yourself to this?'"
Reid enjoyed her experience so much that she says she wants to participate in as many vaccine trials as she can. For this research, each participant received $4,100 as an incentive.
Adverse reactions were what one would expect after getting bit by hundreds of mosquitos and nothing more.
Dr. Kirsten Lyke calls the research "a total game changer."
Lyke led the phase 1 trials for Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine and was a co-investigator for Moderna and Novavax COVID vaccines.
Researchers say the genetically modified mosquitos will not be used at large to vaccinate millions of people. The reason why mosquitos were used instead of syringes, they claim, was to save costs.
"He and his colleagues went this route because it is costly and time consuming to develop a formulation of a parasite that can be delivered with a needle," NPR reports.

More than 100 of the world's most powerful people last week participated in the secretive Bilderberg Meetings in Washington, D.C. — while the media paid little attention.
A secretive meeting of more than 100 of the world's most powerful people just took place in a Washington, D.C. hotel behind closed doors and under tight security — while few reporters even took note.
Bilderberg Meetings attendees — including the director of the CIA, the secretary-general of NATO, European prime ministers, CEOs of pharmaceutical, energy and tech companies (including Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla) — gathered June 2-5 to discuss global issues under an anonymity agreement.
"The participants take part as individuals rather than in any official capacity, and hence are not bound by the conventions of their office or by pre-agreed positions," the group's website states.
On the agenda of the invitation-only summit were topics including "Disruption of the Global Financial System," "Disinformation," "Energy Security and Sustainability," "Post Pandemic Health" and "Fragmentation of Democratic Societies."
As an element of its secrecy, the annual conference invokes the "Chatham House Rule." In meetings held under this rule, "participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s) nor of any other participant may be revealed."
Begun in 1954 by British and U.S. intelligence agencies, the Bilderberg conference has been held in various countries in Europe and North America, with a two-year gap during the COVID-19 pandemic.
About 120 North American and European leaders from Big Tech, Big Pharma, industry, finance, the military, politics and academia are invited each year.
Members of the media are not invited to report on the event "in order to encourage the highest level of openness and dialogue," according to the Bilderberg Meetings website.
Bilderberg participants and security were barred from disclosing the location of the meeting and from quoting anyone during the "off-the-record sessions," according to journalist Max Blumenthal, who attempted to enter the Mandarin Oriental Hotel while the meetings were taking place.
The group claims it does not hold a press conference regarding its agenda due to "lack of interest," and that it "has never sought any public attention."
However, it does issue a press release each year. The key topics for discussion listed in this year's press release were:

The Guardian noted that while in years past, meeting talking points were along the lines of "A Stable Strategic Order" and "What Next For Europe," this year the agenda "reek[ed] of chaos and crisis."
Sometimes "dismissed as a talking shop or crazed imagining of conspiracy theorists," Bilderberg instead "is a major diplomatic summit," reported The Guardian.
Independent journalist Josh Friedman was one of the few people who waited outside the Mandarin Oriental hotel to catch glimpses of the secret proceedings:
English writer Charlie Skelton also tweeted on the meetings, noting the mainstream press's curious lack of interest and the irony of having to rely on Twitter for insight into the proceedings.
"It's a mad irony that the head of NATO [Jens Stoltenberg] is doing more actual reporting on #Bilderberg2022 than almost every news outlet in the world," he wrote.
"The Dutch Foreign Minister says that at #Bilderberg2022 he'd be discussing international affairs `with colleagues from different disciplines,'" he also tweeted.
"Splendidly euphemistic to call the heads of [French multinational insurance company] AXA, [investment company] KKR, [investment firm] Thiel Capital, [investment banking advisory firm] Evercore [and] Amundi (Europe's biggest asset manager) your `colleagues.'"
Journalist Kim Iversen reported on the gathering of what she called "spies, war hawks and world leaders" on a recent episode of The Hill's "Rising."
"Aren't we, the people, entitled to a reading of the minutes?" she asked.
