Apple Watches & iPad Refresh Leaker Jon Prosser says that an iPad refresh and new Apple Watch are expected to be announced the week commencing September 7th by Press release. I’m expecting the iPad refresh to be the base spec iPad moving up from an A10 processor to Apple’s A12 Bionic, but without changes to the 10.2” chassis. The A10 processor debuted in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in 2016, while the A12 arrived with iPhone XS and XS Max, iPhone XR and is currently found in the iPad Air and Mini models, pointing towards their refresh coming in the near future too. However if the Air and Mini are going to get a new design like the iPads Pro, they will likely get a keynote announcement. While there are few details on the Apple Watch refresh, its unlikely a flagship line would be announced by press release, so it could well point to an Apple Watch SE, using the Apple Watch Series 3 body, no force touch and an Apple S5 Chip which may enable always on displays. IPhone 12 & 12 Pro release dates Again, from the Twitter of Jon Prosser, we’re looking at a keynote Apple Special Event on the Week Commencing October 12th - So probably the 12th or 13th as a lot of the events are on Monday or Tuesday. The iPhone 12 (in 5.4 and 6.1” variants) will ship the week commencing October 19th, but the Pro models won’t be shipping until later in the year, potentially with a wait until November for the 6.1 and 6.7” variants. All of this years iPhone models are expected to adopt the new design language from the iPad Pro line, along with A14 generation chips. What else we’ll see at the event is unclear, but Apple Silicon Macs are likely to debut on stage too. It’s also unclear. At this point we also don’t know if the event will be with a live audience or along the lines of the WWDC opening with high production value pre-recorded content. Apple One, all the best of Apple in one place. Finally we’re expecting Apple to reveal a single subscription plan that encompasses their existing services into one price. The report claims that Taiwanese manufacturers are preparing to ramp up for production of "Apple Car" components as early as the second quarter of next year, adding that Apple has been secretly testing dozens of prototype vehicles on the road in California. Apple received a permit from California's DMV to test self-driving vehicles in 2017, and it was spotted using Lexus SUVs rigged with LiDAR equipment that year. While many sources have claimed the Apple Car will be released between 2023 and 2025, including analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the report cites an unnamed director at a major Taiwanese manufacturer who said Apple is targeting a September 2021 launch. While anything is possible, the earlier timeframe is questionable, especially due to the impact of the pandemic. Earlier this month, a DigiTimes report claimed that Apple was in "preliminary" negotiations with automotive electronics suppliers, suggesting that its vehicle project still remains in the fairly early stages. The report added that Apple's chipmaking partner TSMC is reportedly working with Apple on a "self-driving chip." Over the years, reports have flip flopped on whether Apple is developing a full-fledged vehicle or working on artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technologies for vehicles in general. Apple Vision Pro landed just over a week ago and I think it’s fair to say it’s DOMINATED the tech news since. And while I’m definitely not bitter at all that it’s only available in the United States right now, I have been rabidly consuming everyone else’s reviews. And while I think it’s fair to say that the Vision Pro has been very well received, it’s not perfect. So here’s 5 ways Apple can make the next version of Vision Pro EVEN BETTER, without even mentioning the price. Except just then. Roll the thing! 5: iPhone & Apple Watch integration The displays which are just millimetres away from your eyes when you wear Vision Pro are, by all accounts, incredible. Best in the industry. The pixels on the screens are so dense, they pack around 50 pixels in the size of a single iPhone display pixel, and because they’re MicroOLED displays, you get those inky blacks too. However, the cameras on the outside are good, but not quite good enough to read your Apple Watch or iPhone through the headset comfortably. So, why not airplay that content into your headset instead - when you pick up your iPhone when wearing Vision Pro, have the iPhone’s display directly render inside the headset, so you can interact as normal - same when you glance at the watch, have a larger version of the display appear over it so you can work with it easily. Simple! 4: Personas - They’re actually WAY better than the stills on Twitter look…. but… I get it. They do live in the uncanny valley. While its pretty mind-blowing that they look as good as they do, basically calculating your facial expressions on a 3D model as you speak in real time from a combination of the sensors tracking your eye movement and the cameras that capture a little of your mouth movement, and keeping that sync’d to your voice, for some people, you may find it off-putting. So here’s my solution - allow users to choose their Memoji instead of the persona if that’s more comfortable for them! Apple has been able to control these models in realtime since the iPhone X, so this should be no real issue for them. 3: Mac Integration - Don’t just give us a single display viewport, but allow each window to be pulled out from that display once in VisionOS - So they all pop up together and then you can place them anywhere! The Mac still runs them, but only needs to send the video for what you’re looking at, while you look at it. BUT, your Final cut export can still happen in the background on the Mac. The likely bottleneck right now is that the Mac has a limited wireless bandwidth to send the updated video to the Vision Pro, but just like Vision uses foviated rendering to only render at the highest resolution the area your eyes are focused on, Vision could massively drop the frame count that it pulls from the Mac on apps that you’re not currently looking at. 2: Weight, and weight distribution. Apple is known for using high end materials, laptops carved from a single aluminium ingot, solid gold Apple Watches - if only in the first generation which are probably worth more by weight now, but Vision Pro seems to FEEL heavier than the competition, and here’s why. Apple made the choice to separate the battery from the headset and connect it via a cable, unlike the majority of head mounted displays on the market right now. And yes, the weight is slightly higher than most of the others, but more importantly the weight is all at the front, hanging off your face. Some others place the battery at the back of the headband, helping to balance the weight, also making it easier to turn your head more quickly. However, the biggest issue is likely with the strap - Apple supplies the solo knit band, and a dual band, but neither of these are ideal - whereas a top strap like this one on the Pico 4 running front to back means the weight is distributed across the head and you don’t have to over tighten the strap into your face, adding pressure. 1: Higher resolution displays. Hear me out. Not because the pixel density is bad it absolutely isn’t, but adding more pixels for the edges - to improve the field of view. Right now, you see the videos that Apple has put out, but in reality it feels more like this, as if you’re looking down a tunnel than the natural wide field that, you know, eyes have. Now, if you’re someone who wears glasses, it’s like looking out past where the lenses are - it won’t be adding more really useful space, these are not parts of your field of view where you can focus, but those limits on your field of view are a reminder that you’re wearing the headset, rather than becoming fully immersed in whatever you’re doing - whether it’s watching a movie, getting your work done or battling dinosaurs.
